Charming, stunning, inviting — those are the perfect words to describe Fattoria San Donato. Surrounded by vineyards and rolling hills, it’s the perfect home base for exploring nearby towns like Pisa, Siena, and Florence. We loved how easy it was to get around, but some of our favorite moments came from just following the staff’s tips for local trekking and biking trails through the countryside.
The rooms here boast stone walls, antique furniture, and a sense of history in every creak of the floorboards. We had the apartment, and while it wasn’t fancy, it was warm and full of character. We had a small kitchenette and dining nook where we made coffee and simple breakfasts before setting off each morning.
Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying their own Vernaccia di San Gimignano, Chianti Colli Senesi, and that amazing extra-virgin olive oil. We booked a tasting and wandered through the vineyards, learning about their organic methods while sipping wine under the Tuscan sun. Looking for the perfect little escape just outside the heart of San Gimignano? Take a look at Hotel Da Graziano! This hotel is only a 10-minute stroll from the town center. We loved that we could walk to Piazza del Duomo and Torre Grossa without breaking a sweat. There’s even a supermarket only a stone’s throw away!
Aside from the location, we also enjoyed our Deluxe Double Room. It had a comfy bed, a mini-bar, and a flat-screen TV. The highlight, though, was none other than the view. From our balcony, we could see the old towers of San Gimignano glowing in the sunset. Housekeeping did a stellar job too; we would come back every afternoon to a spotless room and perfectly fluffed pillows.
And let’s talk about the food. The Restaurant Da Graziano downstairs served up some of the best homemade pizza and pasta we had in Tuscany. We also tried their seafood special, and it was incredibly fresh. On top of that, the breakfast was amazing, too. It had lots of variety, great coffee, and gluten-free options.

Best Budget. On a tight budget? You’ll certainly want to stay at Residenza D’Epoca Palazzo Buonaccorsi. Housed in a 13th-century building, this charming Tuscan guesthouse was just a short stroll from Torre Grossa and the main bus stop, which allowed us to explore the area easily. Not only that, but the staff also welcomed us warmly. They handed us a map filled with local tips, and thanks to their suggestions, we discovered some amazing hidden corners of the town we might have otherwise missed.
Our Triple Room was spacious and full of character, with beautiful wooden beams overhead and those classic terracotta floors. The furnishings had an old-world charm. It was a bit grand, a bit rustic, and fit perfectly with the historic vibe of the place. Our room had a shared bathroom, and it turned out to be a great choice, as everything was squeaky clean. For anyone wanting a little extra privacy, some rooms do come with private bathrooms.
One of our favorite spots was the cozy little patio. In the morning, we would sit out there with coffee, watching the town slowly wake up. It’s also a great spot for you to end your day with a glass of wine.

Hotel Bel Soggiorno is one of the brightest gems inside San Gimignano’s ancient walls. From the hotel, everything in town was so close and walkable that we barely needed a map. The Collegiata di San Gimignano was less than five minutes away, and getting lost in the charming cobbled streets was half the fun. Since no cars are allowed inside the walls, we strolled in with our bags, and the lovely staff came right out to help. They were genuinely kind and made us feel at home straight away.
We booked the Family Room, and it was everything we wanted it to be. The queen-sized bed was so comfortable that we slept like rocks every night. However, the balcony was our favorite part. We would step out and just stare at that panoramic view.
Oh, the breakfast! Every morning, we sat by the big windows with plates piled high at the restaurant next door. But the real magic was the view. Having coffee while watching the sun warm the countryside below was something truly special.

We really enjoyed our stay at Hotel Villa Belvedere. Just a quick 10-minute stroll from the historic town center, the location was great for us. We were close enough to visit the town for an evening walk, yet far enough to escape the buzz. Plus, with Florence, Siena, and Volterra only about 40 minutes away by car, it became our ideal home base for exploring the heart of Italy’s art and history.
All of the rooms at this humble hotel have this lovely vintage charm that makes you feel like you’re living in a different era. Ours came with a queen-sized bed and a handy twin-sized bed, and the bathroom was spotless, stocked with fresh toiletries that smelled divine.
Hotel Villa Belvedere has been beautifully refurbished, but they’ve kept the soul of its 19th-century elegance intact. The gardens, however, are straight out of a postcard. Best Resort. Villasanpaolo Resort & Spa was exactly the kind of Tuscan escape we had been dreaming of. Olive groves stretched as far as we could see, and every morning the light made the whole valley glow. Moreover, it’s just a few minutes to San Gimignano. And if that’s not enough, it’s also about an hour to Florence, Pisa, or Siena. We ended up taking a spontaneous day trip, always happy to return “home” to the quiet hills at sunset.
There are so many gorgeous rooms to choose from, and ours was on the ground floor. It was in one of the villas near the swimming pool, with its own little garden where we had breakfast. It was spacious and calm, with modern touches like a jacuzzi bath, soft linens, and the dreamiest olive oil bath products.
A stay at this resort won’t be complete without a visit to Irispa Benessere, the on-site spa. Between the warm outdoor pool, the hydromassage jets, and the Turkish bath, we were completely melted by the end of it. After pampering ourselves there, we continued to dine at Lampolla Restaurant. We sat by the window watching San Gimignano’s towers glow in the distance while we devoured truffle pasta and local wine.

We stayed at Hotel La Cisterna, which—no surprise—is right on the lively Piazza della Cisterna. What a spot! The square buzzes from morning till night, full of cafes, little shops, and some of the best gelato we had in Tuscany. Sure, it’s a magnet for tourists, but that’s part of the charm.
Our room was on the third floor, looking straight out over the old stone well in the piazza. Inside, the space was both rustic and comfortable, with wooden beams and a cozy vibe. The restaurant at Hotel La Cisterna is also worth mentioning. Le Terrazze served up classic Tuscan dishes that made us wish dinner could last forever. The breakfast we had was nice, too. We thought we had seen every kind of Tuscan magic by now, until we rolled up to La Collegiata, perched just outside San Gimignano. Best for Vegans. Agriturismo I Pini is a very special hotel in San Gimignano. The property is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, and well-manicured gardens. Every corner here is tended with care and purpose. And with just 11 beautifully designed lodgings, it felt intimate and deeply connected to the land, as if nature itself was our host.
The highlight of this hotel, though, is its approach to sustainability. Everything, from the sun-warmed terracotta tiles beneath our feet to the vegan, seasonal dishes served in the dining room, reflected an authentic respect for the earth. The meals we had were memorable. They were colorful, nourishing, and bursting with flavor. You can tell the team here doesn’t just talk about eco-consciousness but also live it in every detail.

Best Value for Money. You don’t always have to spend a fortune to have the best stay, and Leon Bianco is the perfect example. First of all, it’s super well located. Right on Piazza della Cisterna, it’s impossible to find a better spot in San Gimignano. Once we stepped out the door, we were surrounded by cobblestones, towers, and local life. It’s wild to think this building has been around since the 11th century, yet it still feels warm and welcoming.
We stayed in the Superior King Room, and honestly, it was everything we had hoped for. One of the higher rooms, the view of terracotta rooftops stretching into the soft green Tuscan hills stole the show. The room had all the little comforts we needed, too. Think great shower, comfy bed, minibar, and a much-appreciated air conditioner.
We also enjoyed our breakfast here. Expect plates of pastries, cheeses, and good coffee. We would also grab drinks from the bar and sit on the terrace, just soaking in the quiet. There’s even a tiny gym and a billiards room tucked inside, though we mostly exercised by climbing towers and chasing gelato. Speaking of which, getting to the hotel was easy, too.
