Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, Wörthersee
11
We begin with the Falkensteiner Schlosshotel Velden, which sits facing the shimmering, azure waters of Lake Wörthersee. This 17th-century Austrian castle-turned-contemporary five-star retreat perfectly blended modern comfort with old-world grandeur. However, its best and most well-known feature is the 3,600 sq-meters-huge Acquapura Spa. The spa features not only outdoor/indoor pools, but also private cabanas, cinema-style relaxation rooms, and saunas. Since we were traveling here in summer, the “Beach Club” offered us direct access to the lake, with the atmosphere akin to an Alpine lagoon.
Clearly, the hotel sits at the crossroads of modern design and imperial style, turning it into a holistic, sensual, and deeply restorative haven. Even rooms were divided into ornate ones in the historical wing and sleek suites offering panoramic garden and lake views. Nevertheless, they all had smart technology for a comfortable, modern stay. An elevated dining experience at the Michelin-starred restaurant, a modern fitness center, and chic outdoor terraces overlooking the water round out the place.

MalisGarten Adults-Only Green Spa Hotel, Zell am Ziller
10
The MalisGarten Adults-Only Green Spa Hotel sits in the scenic Zillertal Valley, reinventing luxury hospitality in a holistic, gourmet, and sustainable way. Hailed by Gault & Millau as the “Hotel of the Year 2024,” this adults-only property seduced us with its soothing decor, solid wood details, and deep connection to nature. The zenith of its being is definitely the Herbarium Spa, which was the epitome of plant-based care. What’s more, this sanctuary had a 23-meter-long indoor-outdoor swimming pool and a subtly scented atmosphere infused with natural essences, and even offered a wealth of bespoke rituals. Not only did it have a garden, a pool, and a sauna, but it also had a cold cabin and offered microneedling and radiofrequency treatments.
The rest of the resort also focused on wellness and healing, with the rooms and suites adorned with spruce and pine, making for a regeneration cocoon of sorts. Nature also takes centerstage at the restaurants and the bar, with wild herb-based cuisine and botanical cocktails.

Hotel Schloss Seefels, Pörtschach am Wörthersee

Best lakeside wellness. Sitting on Lake Wörthersee is the five-star luxury Hotel Schloss Seefels, which isn’t one of the region’s best stays without reason. The luxurious spa is the absolute highlight, which is built on rock and is more than 1100 sq. meters in size. Not only does it have a panoramic sauna where we could enjoy the magnificent views of the lake’s waters, but it also offers an exclusive menu of facial and body treatments with products from Sisley and La Maison Valmont. If that wasn’t enough, it has a plethora of other relaxation options, which include tastefully designed relaxation rooms, an outdoor whirlpool, a brine laconium, a steam bath, and a variety of saunas.
That’s not all. The comfortably tempered lakeside pool, which sits directly in Lake Wörthersee, was one of our most unique swimming and unwinding experiences. The relaxation continues with the motto “Namaste by the lake,” with tennis, golf, watersports, fitness classes, and weekly yoga sessions. Of course, the 30,000-square-meter castle garden, complete with the private swimming beach, is the cherry on top.

Hotel Jungbrunn – The Gutzeitort, Tannheim

The family-run Hotel Jungbrunn – The Gutzeitort, which has been around since 1957, shines with a spa de luxe. This wellness outpost, which sits in a charming, tranquil, and verdant location on the outskirts of Tannheim, has a rugged and winding 8000 sq-meter-huge spa. In fact, everything about the spa was impressive: not only did it have its own spring, which fed it with the purest mountain water, but it also had a number of different wellness spaces. For instance, it not only had outdoor and indoor saunas, but it also had a natural waterfall, a Kneipp pool, a brine grotto (yes!), a tepidarium, a bathing biotope, as well as outdoor and indoor pools sprinkled with panoramic loungers.
We loved being pampered by the highly trained professionals who, with their excellent skills and a gamut of treatments, ensured our relaxation and well-being. Not only that, but we could also book special treatments for men and even pregnant women, as well as a wide variety of massages and even fascia therapy. Did we mention that they even used Far Eastern methods? Sigh, yes.
We had the choice of 13 different room types, with the best of them featuring terraces with fabulous views, open fireplaces, and freestanding glass bathtubs. Cozy parlors, an excellent restaurant terrace, included meals, an atmospheric fireplace bar, and live music wrap up the amenities of this adults-only paradise.

Genussdorf Gmachl, Salzburg

The word “Genussdorf” translates to “enjoyment village” in German, and that’s how the Genussdorf Gmachl is. The family-run hotel, which has been around for seven generations, lives for pleasure, as the family describes itself. Moreover, its pampering programme ranges from the sauna world to a rooftop spa with an infinity pool. Hence, it’s no wonder that this hotel spa was awarded four lilies and a perfect score by the Relax Guide, one of the most recognized wellness guides in Europe.
The hotel revolves around the adults-only DorfSPA, which is rooted in tradition but has a watchful eye on the future. Our favorite space was the infinity pool on the roof, complete with breathtaking views of Salzburg’s fortress. Not only that, but it also has a panorama sauna, quiet resting bunks, and the Vitarium, which offers massages, Ayurveda treatments, and body treatments with natural cosmetics that activate the mind, body, and soul. Meanwhile, the Garden SPA has a natural bathing pond, a brine grotto, indoor and outdoor pools, and even a whirlpool and a family sauna area. Cozy, village-like, and yet with an urban touch, that’s how this four-star hotel sees unwinding in luxury.

Therme Laa Hotel, Laa an der Thaya

In the heart of Lower Austria sits the Therme Laa Hotel, a VAMED Vitality World Resort and home to the exclusive, adults-only Silent Spa. A wonderful and unique blend of exquisite service, fine materials, delicate fragrances, soft light, warm thermal water, and a tranquil space, this is one space consciously designed for relaxation and rejuvenation.
The unique architecture by Wolfgang Vanek greatly helps make the inimitably relaxing atmosphere, as the luxury of modern bathing culture comes together with elements of sacred architecture. The Silent Spa boasts a walk-in water landscape featuring a dominant octagonal tower and four ellipses, complete with a three-storied cascading fountain. Moreover, the individual ellipses even had comfortable loungers for relaxation and retreat as well as a steam bath, a private spa suite, and even a saltwater pool. Wrapping up the features were an exercise room, a high-quality sauna area with relaxation ceremonies, and a bar and restaurant.

Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort
5
The luxurious Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort is like a rare find that blooms in a rugged but pristine alpine valley. Owned and operated by the warm Hettegger family and its team, this laidback luxury resort in Salzburgerland is the very picture of alpine coziness.
The well-thought-out interior design has a huge part to play in that, with tons of light, natural materials, and earthy hues. This vibe also continues in the 7000-sq-meter-huge Edelweiss Mountain Spa, which features 2 discrete areas across as many as 5 levels. While one is specifically reserved for adults, the other is a family-friendly one where adults and kids can have their own share of fun. The 1000-sq-meter-huge family-friendly spa area not only has a family-friendly sauna area, but also play facilities, an indoor pool with a toddler and baby area, and a massive indoor aqua park with as many as 5 water slides.
However, we were more interested in the adults-only Mountain Spa, where we could swim in and lounge by the infinity pool and relax in the spacious sauna area. What’s more, the spa menu offered a bevy of high-quality treatments in both places, including special treatments for kids. If there was ever family friendly spa luxury, this would be it.

Bio and Wellness Hotel Stanglwirt, Wilden Kaiser

Looking like a postcard-perfect set of “The Sound of Music,” the 400-year-old Bio and Wellness Hotel Stanglwirt has been sustainable long before the term was even fashionable. This elegant lodge in the Austrian Alps has long been a retreat for generations of well-to-do European families and, more recently, a wave of celebrities. We also headed here in pursuit of mountain scenery and fresh air, and we were mesmerized.
What started off as an inn is now an internationally renowned, 10th-generation family-run, organic, and wellness luxury resort. The 12,000-square-meter spa boasts majestic views of the mountains of the Wilder Kaiser. On the inside, it has a comprehensive roster of effective massage therapies and medical beauty treatments. What’s more, it’s famously home to the largest hotel-owned brine thermal pool in Europe, and we were enchanted by the natural bathing lake. If that wasn’t enough, families had their own family wellness world, with multiple steam baths and saunas.
That’s not all; the resort did a different kind of wellness too, in the form of a professional sports pool as well as other indoor and outdoor pools. Even younger ones had a lot of fun here, with the children’s water world with swimming courses, the 120-meter-long water slide, and the pool cinema! If that wasn’t enough, there was even a long list of sports and activity programs in the form of Pilates, yoga, Nordic walking, aqua-gymnastics, and even personal training with celebrity coach Björn Schulz.

Posthotel Achenkirch Resort and Spa

Best adults-only spa hotel. Tucked between Karwendel Nature Park and Lake Achensee, the Posthotel Achenkirch Resort and Spa offered the perfect harmony between nature, serenity, and upscale refinement. We loved everything about this adults-only five-star hotel, which sat in a former private stud farm.
The spa hotel offered a unique sensory journey that focused on inner balance and rejuvenation. At the center of it all sat the magnificent 7,000-square-meter spa, which was jaw-dropping, to say the least. Composed of sauna, wellness, and water worlds, the spa was the pinnacle of relaxation, especially since it boasted spectacular views of the Karwendel Mountains. Not only did it feature treatments inspired by Asian traditions, but it also featured an extensive aquatic world as well as a number of immersive saunas, such as the spectacular Sunken Temple. This sauna landscape was hidden from view and was accessible through a hidden entrance in a subterranean space. Finally, there was a ton of other wellness experiences on offer, including traditional Chinese medicine, yoga classes, Indian Ayurveda treatments, exotic specials, high-quality regional-classic massages, and even teachings by a Shaolin master. Sigh.

Naturhotel Forsthofgut, Leogang

Best family-friendly spa hotel. Home to the inimitable waldSPA, Naturhotel Forsthofgut is the place where you come to rest, relax, and unwind, leaving everyday life behind. This terrific family-first resort in Salzburgerland brimmed with activities for us adults as well as the kids, which is what made it such a great spa holiday for all of us. To top it all off, Leogang is even a winter sports hotspot; what more could we ask for?
Throughout our stay at Forsthofgut, our enjoyment was inextricably linked with nature. We all especially loved the 5,700-sq-meter waldSPA, which translates to “forest spa.” It featured both spacious adults-only and family zones. While the adults-only area was open to guests aged 16 years and above and was the epitome of heavenly tranquility, the waldSPA Family & Kids section was family fun all the way. Not only did it have on three slides in the water workshop, but it also had a 21-meter-long pool, an indoor swimming pool, and two kids’ pools in each of them. Since even the most active kids also need breaks, the waldSPA Family & Kids area had specific rest areas for kids and even a variety of treatments. Did we mention that there was even a textile sauna for guests who were aged 10 years and above?
If you’re looking for some adults-only relaxation, WaldSPA also has an adults-only multi-storeyed spa as well as a separate day lodge with an adults-only infinity pool and a Japanese restaurant. Did we mention that the grounds also had an all-ages adventure park-meets-alpine farm? Yes!

Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol

Best overall. Sitting at the top of the list is the five-star Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol, which is perched at a height of nearly 1300 meters on the Seefeld plateau. Excellent Tyrolean hospitality, combined with the five-star service and the fresh alpine air, truly relaxed us to no extent.
“Mountainside wellness and luxury didn’t get any better than at Interalpen Tyrol; it was the zenith of alpine luxury quite literally!”
WOW Travel

The zenith of wellness here is the 5300-sq-meter wellness area, and its centerpiece is the 48-meter-long panoramic indoor/outdoor pool. Filled with Grander water, it allowed us to enjoy sweeping and spectacular views of the surrounding Tyrolean Alps. We were absolutely in love with the spacious Tyrolean sauna village, which had steam baths, a bio sauna, and a gorgeous stone pine parlor. Not only that, but the place also had a bunch of other extras, including a ladies’ spa, a textile sauna, and even a relaxation room with a wonderful fireplace and a relaxation pavilion by the spa garden, all with panoramic views.
We highly recommend the signature treatment “Tyrolean Sensual Pleasure” from the massage menu. If you’re on a romantic sojourn, book the Private Spa Suite for undisturbed serenity and some quiet romantic time for the two of you.
No wonder it’s also one of the best 5-star hotels in Innsbruck.

Where to Stay in Austria?
While Austria has amazing towns and cities like Vienna, Salzburg, and Tyrol, which are famed for their spa outposts as much as their culture, there are many more towns in the country that are specifically known for their spas.
We begin with the historic Baden bei Wien, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Lower Austria, which has gorgeous parks, architecture, and thermal baths with “golden waters”. Next, we head to the regions of Salzburg/Carinthia, where we have towns such as Bad Gastein (famous for its spa hotels and dramatic waterfalls), Zell am See-Kaprun (spa outpost on the lake), and Bad Kleinkirchheim in Carinthia (skiing alongside wellness resorts and thermal spas).
Towns such as Seefeld and Aqua Dome are bursting with Tyrolean Charm. While the former is a classic Tyrolean village and nature-focused spa break known for its wellness stays, the latter is a standout contemporary thermal spa in the jaw-dropping Ötztal valley. In fact, Aqua Dome happens to be one of the world’s most beautiful hot springs! Finally, other notable spa destinations include the imperial spa town of Bad Ischl in Salzkammergut and Bad Waltersdorf in Styria, which has a dedicated thermal resort area.
What’s the etiquette in an Austrian spa?
Nudity is required within sauna rooms in Austria, but always sit on a towel in the sauna to keep the benches dry and clean. However, you can wear bathrobes and towels in the rest of the sauna area.
Does Austria have hot springs?
Yes, Austria has around 40 thermal baths, where water steams, flows, and bubbles. However, bathing facilities can only be called “thermal baths” if they have their own groundwater and spring with discharge temperatures of more than 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit).
