Famous as the largest ski resort in the Austrian Alps, Innsbruck is the epitome of what winter sports paradises are made of. Blending culture, history, and stunning mountain views, this lovely, scenic Tyrolean capital has something for everyone. Whether we wanted to hit the slopes or explore the majestic Habsburg palaces, Innsbruck never disappointed. What’s more, we wanted to experience absolute luxury in the Austrian Alps, and the city didn’t disappoint in that either. We found a bevy of 5-star hotels in Innsbruck, which ranged from luxurious resorts to stylish city and sleek center stays. They might have all differed in location, but they all had a common thread: digs, fantastic views, and a string of amenities that had us go ‘wow.’ In fact, we didn’t even have to lift a finger!
What made our stay all the better was that there was so much to explore in this Austrian skiing town. Most of the top things to do in Innsbruck lie in its Old Town, or Altstadt, with its elegant palace, cozy squares, and the baroque cathedral. Moreover, the surrounding mountains added to the magic, especially when they were carpeted with wildflowers in summer and spring, and snow-capped in winter. Finally, the skiing lifts and the local tram system were very handy for our longer stay. Clearly, Innsbruck offers something for everyone in every season. So, why not do it in absolute and abject luxury? Here’s a guide to the most luxurious stays in Innsbruck, Austria.

Schloss Matzen
10
How would you like to stay in what is one of the best castle hotels in Austria? Welcome to Schloss Matzen, which sits in a 1,000-year-old fortress just about an hour from Innsbruck. And yet, somehow, the gorgeous castle hotel managed to feel both ancient and alive at the same time.
Despite its historic pedigree, the castle hotel boasted plenty of modern amenities that blew our minds. Its highlight and standout amenity is the spa, which is nestled within a medieval tower from the 1100s. We’d relax and unwind in a candlelit chamber carved from stone, feeling the centuries of calm settle around us. Between the wellness treatments here inspired by the Middle Ages and castle yoga sessions, we were left feeling like we had traveled back in time, but with access to modern comforts somehow. We didn’t have to leave the castle for food either, as the on-site restaurant offered local wine and Austrian comfort food. Post-dinner sessions would be in the courtyard, where we’d unwind under the stars.
The castle might be old, but the rooms and suites were thoroughly modern. What’s more, they all were individually decked out with satellite TVs, sleek bathrooms with bespoke bath products, and mesmerizing views out of the windows.

Hotel Maximilian Stadthaus Penz

We made ourselves easily at home at the Hotel Maximilian Stadthaus Penz, which sat right in the heart of Downtown Innsbruck. In fact, River Inn was just a few streets away, and it sat right in the heart of Altstadt. What more could we ask for?
We had the choice of 51 rooms and suites, all of which came with absolute state-of-the-art creature comforts. These included not only flat screen TVs and minibars, but also complimentary Wi-fi that kept us connected. We especially loved the sleek bathrooms, which came with not just double vanities, but also bespoke bath products. Thanks to the blackout drapes/curtains, we were able to sleep in on the days we were not exploring Innsbruck.
The hotel, just like other excellent luxurious stays, had a slew of amenities. The lobby with the fireplace impressed us right off the bat, but the hotel also had ski storage and free wi-fi everywhere. Despite there being no restaurant, the hotel offered an excellent buffet breakfast spread every morning. In fact, the place even had a bar/lounge, where we’d enjoy drinks in the evening before stepping out for dinner. A complimentary ski shuttle, a reception hall, and a nearby fitness center wrap up the amenities here.

Boutiquehotel Weisses Rössl

Innsbruck is unarguably the zenith of Alpine high culture — no pun intended — and has long been a favorite for the Tyrolean history buffs and slope junkies. Its pedestrianized old town preserves this very essence, and few hotels do it as well as the Boutiquehotel Weisses Rössl. (“white horse”). Old world charm meets contemporary comfort at this hotel, which showcases four generations of Plank family hospitality.
This casual hotel sits in a 17th-century structure with old-school decor near the River Inn. It might have a 600-plus-year pedigree, but it’s been painstakingly transformed into the very paragon of efficiency — sensible and solid. We loved how it made use of the available space, with stonework accents and aged wood ensuring artisan touches throughout. What’s more, the amenities were absolutely top-notch, ranging from the Gothic lobby to the woody restaurant and the chic bar with cellar seating. Of course, free Wi-fi is available everywhere.
Of the cool, calm, and collected rooms and suites, all of which were thoughtfully appointed in grayscale and complementing organic textures. The warm and low-key vibe aside, they all were equipped with 21st-century mod-cons, including flat-screen TVs, luxe bathrooms, coffeemakers, murals/skylights, and even separate living rooms in the suites.

Das Innsbruck

Overlooking River Inn, the luxurious Das Innsbruck boasted one of the best locations in the entire town. The structure it sits in, with the colourful façade, dates back to 1870, but on the inside, the hotel is as polished and 21st-century as it gets. What we loved the most was that we had gorgeous views of the town, River Inn, and the mountains in the distance from everywhere in the hotel.
We had a great choice of laidback rooms and suites, all of which came with sleek mod-cons such as plush beds, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-fi, and luxe bathrooms. If you want to splurge, the upgraded rooms even have more space in the form of sitting areas.. However, the pinnacle of luxury was the bi-level suites, which even had pull-out sofas and rainfall showers.
We were most impressed by the amenities of the hotel as well, which were expected. The elegant wood-paneled restaurant with a modern bar was where we’d tuck into all meals, including a fantastic breakfast buffet. More, it was also where we’d enjoy drinks before stepping out to explore the nightlife. However, our favorite lounging space was the indoor pool, which even had a daybed and hammocks to relax. That, along with the wellness area, which had a spa, saunas, and panoramic views, ensured that we had our own private space to unwind once we came back to the hotel. Finally, ski storage, concierge services, and bicycles to rent rounded up the amenities here.

Hotel Klosterbräu & SPA

Most historic. To say that Hotel Klosterbräu is historic is an understatement — the luxurious Seefeld institution has lived former lives as not just a 16th-century monastery, but also a brewery, and a war hospital over more than half a millennium! Its current form is due to the sixth generation of proprietors, who have honored its former life with eclectic, funky decor and excellent service and hospitality.

That vibe extends to the digs, where bold, funky textiles pair very well with weathered beams and exposed brick. What’s more, the refined rooms ranged from simple but elegant to lavish ones, featuring minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-fi, with some even featuring balconies. Moreover, the upgraded ones even added private terraces, with the suites offering fireplaces and antique furnishings! Since we got extremely lucky, we were upgraded to one of their brand-new “Wellness Suites.” Besides all the other creature comforts, our Wellness Suite had a lot of special offerings: think a complimentary minibar, a private beer machine, and the main highlight, a private sauna on the balcony.
“A wellness space with a private sauna and a private beer machine? Sign us up!”
WOW Travel
Ranging from an on-site petting zoo to an inexhaustible beer fountain, there was no shortage of attractions on the property. Even though we had our own wellness suite, we had to check out the wellness and spa area with the indoor and outdoor pools, the rooftop jacuzzi, and a wooden sauna. Did we mention that the treatment rooms were in the cellars and vaults of the old monastery? Yep. Wrapping up the amenities were a playground, gardens, a piano bar, and a fine-dining restaurant in a medieval-era wine cellar.

Alpin Resort Sacher

If you don’t mind staying a little outside of Innsbruck, then we’d highly recommend the five-star Alpin Resort Sacher. Tucked into the heart of the ski village of Seefeld, this upscale hotel is all about heartwarming alpine hospitality. The mint-chocolate-colored facade stands out, with its interiors being maximalist mountaincore; think all rustic stone, antlers, and warm wood.
We had the choice of a number of rustic-chic rooms and suites, all of which were vibrant and luxurious to a fault. What’s more, they had some very interesting decor – think even more antlers and oversized artwork. Complementing the eclectic decor were the solid oak floors and electric fireplaces, among other things. Creature comforts included the likes of many bars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-fi, with the suites adding furnished balconies with sweeping views. Nevertheless, all rooms enjoyed superb room service.
Our days began with a delicious breakfast buffet spread at one of the two high-end restaurants. What’s more, there was also a stylish piano bar, a sun terrace, and a conservatory. That being said, our favorite was the posh spa, which featured a relaxation room with water beds, a sauna, a fitness center, and a heated indoor/outdoor pool.

aDLERS Hotel Innsbruck

The Tyrolean way of life and modern design come together at the aDLERS Hotel Innsbruck. Sitting in a modern building in the heart of Innsbruck, it is right down the road from Innsbruck Central Train Station. So, location-wise, it couldn’t be any better.
All 75 rooms and suites here enjoy breathtaking views of the Tyrolean mountains, which is what we loved about the hotel. In fact, they all offer individual perspectives of the Inntal Valley and the town. Sandwiched between the 7th and the 11th floors, the air-conditioned digs all feature a distinctive urban Alpine design. At the same time, they all have a slew of mod-cons, including minibars, flat-screen satellite TVs, and luxe bathrooms.
The 12th-floor restaurant and bar happened to be the culinary peak of the Tyrolean region. At the end of the day, it was the perfect place to sip on drinks while soaking in views of Innsbruck. That being said, our favorite space was Adler’s Spa, which had not only a Finnish sauna, but also a wide treatment menu, a panoramic relaxation area, an infrared cabin, a steam bath, and a bio sauna.

Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol

Best views. Perched atop the Seefeld plateau, Interalpen-Hotel Tyrol lies tucked away at the end of a lovely mountain road. Staying here afforded us some of the most memorable views of the Austrian Alps. We had the choice of 282 cozy and contemporary rooms and suites, all of which featured a clean design, stone fireplaces, and expertly crafted wooden furnishings. Not only were they all spacious, but they also had soft hues, warm wood, and exquisite fabrics, nicely blending contemporary alpine flair with Tyrolean charm. Did we mention the luxe bathrooms with bathtubs and rain showers? Yep.
That being said, the zenith of the amenities here is the stunning 57,000 sq. ft.-huge spa, one of the largest in the entire region. The jaw-dropping space variety of cosmetic treatments, but also an indoor pool with sweeping views of the Austrian Alps. That’s not all; it also has fitness classes, yoga, and even a restaurant. Did we mention the spa garden and the Tyrolean sauna village? Yep. A slew of restaurants, a long roster of outdoor activities, and a wonderful children’s club wrap up the amenities here.

STAGE 12 – Hotel by Penz

Sleekest. The design-driven Stage 12 Hotel by Penz brings some serious amounts of style and panache to Innsbruck’s Altstadt. Tucked in a historic structure, the hotel isn’t just close to all landmarks. It also boasts pop-up views of the Alps from its sleek, glass-walled rooms and boasts one of the best breakfasts in town. No wonder it’s one of the best hotels in Innsbruck, Austria.
Despite sitting bang in the heart of all the Altstadt action, the hotel’s rooms and suites were surprisingly quiet. What’s more, all rooms are streamlined, light, and chic, featuring soundproofed windows, comfy beds, fine linens, and solid oak parquet floors. What’s more, the neutral hues help bring forth the beauty of the decor. However, what we loved the most was our glass-fronted ‘mountain view’ room with a balcony, where the alpine view made our morning, every morning.
We loved the informal setup, the sociable atmosphere, and the genuine welcome. The staff was extremely helpful, whether it was a restaurant recommendation or a walking map. Amenities were aplenty: a well-equipped fitness center, ski storage in the basement, and breakfast served in the bistro-style room, despite there being no restaurant. Our favorite was the Moroccan-style lantern-lit, stylish spa, which had a steam room, a sauna, and a hammam. Don’t miss the cracking cocktail bar that serves delicious drinks.

Relais&Châteaux Spa-Hotel Jagdhof

Most luxurious. There can’t be a list of luxury stays without mentioning a Relais&Châteaux property, can there? Behold the Relais&Châteaux Spa-Hotel Jagdhof, which is the five-star to counter all five-star stays in Innsbruck. It was back in 1956 that Margot and Leo Pfurtscheller opened a café in the valley, which is now the hotel that we saw today. Currently, their son Armin and his better half, Christina, are at the helm of this splendid five-star establishment.
We had the choice of 71 rooms and suites, each of which featured a mountain-centric décor. We loved the bold Tyrolean look, with its trinkets reflecting local traditions, antique furniture, and wood panels, with the result being a cozy and warm space. What’s more, they were all spacious and were equipped with the very latest in technology and creature comforts. We had the pleasure of staying in the best in the house, the master suite “Kirchdachl.” This 94 sq. meter suite not only had two bedrooms, but also had a rustic seating area and a balcony with spectacular mountain views. The highlight was the spacious bathroom with a central heart-shaped bathtub.
An award-winning restaurant aside, this hotel is also Austria’s only wine hotel. Moreover, it had multiple dining rooms for delicious afternoon tea, a five-course set menu offering gourmet local cuisine, and a cable car-turned-mini restaurant that only served fondues! However, without a doubt, the best place is the indoor/outdoor 3000 m² spa with mountain views! The amenities are exceptional: more than 20 types of relaxation rooms, saunas, and baths, and indoor and outdoor pools. Don’t miss heading to the adults-only, two-storied spa chalet, which requires complete silence. It has a jacuzzi, three differently themed relaxation rooms with a tea bar, balconies, fireplaces, huge lounge chairs, and saunas. Sigh.

Where to Stay in Innsbruck?
Innsbruck’s city centre might be a great base for nightlife, dining, and sightseeing, but it’s not ideal for exploring the mountains in the surrounding region. And while staying in the city center is extremely convenient, there are other great alternative places to stay outside it, too. Here’s a detailed guide.
We begin with the city center or the old town, a.k.a. Altstadt. Roughly stretching between the Inn River and the train station, the old town slash city center is where most of the city’s architectural highlights, landmarks, and places of interest are located. Additionally, it’s home to an enticing array of amazing bars and restaurants. Secondly, there’s the elevated area of Hungerberg, which lies northeast of the old town. Thanks to the Hungerburgbahn funicular, it’s directly connected to the city center. Moreover, staying here allows you access to Seegrube and further to Hafelekarspitze via the Nordkettenbahnen cable, as well as many hiking trails. Hence, this is ideal for travelers both with and without cars.
Finally, there are the villages of Lans and the sprawling Mittelgebirgsterrasse plateau. While Lans lies just 7 km (4.3 mi) above Innsbruck, this idyllic destination is the perfect stress-free base outside the town. The plateau, on the other hand, sits southwest of Innsbruck. It’s home to a string of small villages and traditional Tyrolean farmhouses.
Should I stay in Innsbruck Altstadt?
While it’s congested, more expensive for parking, and far from trailheads, there’s something absolutely magical about staying in Innsbruck’s Altstadt (Old Town). It’s home to the main landmarks, is walkable, and has a lovely historic ambiance.
Where should I stay in Innsbruck for skiing?
Staying in the city center, which offers access to the Nordkette lift, is a great option. However, you can also stay in Lans or Igls for a quieter atmosphere and access to the Patscherkofel.
How do I get to ski resorts from Innsbruck?
Getting around Innsbruck’s skiing areas is easy via car or via public transport like the Hungerburgbahn funicular or the free ski bus.
