High above the town of Mittersill, Hotel Schloss Mittersill promises a one-of-a-kind stay. First of all, the hotel’s location is unbeatable. It overlooks the Hohe Tauern Mountains and offers a panorama that looks like a painting. And the best part? The ski lifts of the Kitzbühel Alps are just a short five-minute drive away, which made it perfect for our winter escape.

Inside, expect modern comfort. We spent an entire afternoon hopping between saunas, relaxing in the infrared cabin, and floating in the heated outdoor pool. There’s even an option to book a private sauna if you want a little extra peace and quiet. And to balance things out, you can take advantage of the fitness center, too.

What’s more, the food was just what we hoped for in an Austrian mountain castle: hearty, local, and absolutely delicious. The restaurant serves traditional dishes made with regional ingredients, and the half-board option made it easy to enjoy a slow, indulgent evening without leaving the cozy atmosphere of the castle.

If you think our previous pick is amazing, wait until you see Hotel Spirodom. Set in a quiet mountain valley, the castle hotel is surrounded by crisp alpine air and breathtaking views. We loved how close everything was, from the Admont Abbey Library and Enns River to the trails of Gesäuse National Park.

Like the rest of the rooms on the property, our Double Room had warm oak floors, soft lighting, and a comfy bed. We also had a private balcony that opened up to a postcard view of the gardens and mountains. Our room also had other standard amenities, like free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and free toiletries.

If you decide to stay here, make sure to check out the spa, which boasts a Nordic sauna, a steam room, and a lounge. Don’t ask us how many times we went there! And once we’d done everything on our list, we loved to end our days at the fireplace bar. But if you still have tons of energy left, take a swim in the indoor pool.

TAUROA Schloss Gabelhofen

TAUROA Schloss Gabelhofen is an extremely captivating hotel. This gorgeous castle, complete with a real moat and mountain views that stop you in your tracks, has such an old-world charm that it’s impossible not to be a little awestruck. Walking through the gates, surrounded by peaceful gardens and the sound of trickling water, we instantly felt that quiet, regal kind of calm.

What made it even better was how perfectly located it was. We could explore Fohnsdorf and other nearby spots like Judenburg’s Main Square and the Sternenturm Planetarium easily, as they were all within walking distance. We even borrowed the hotel’s bikes and pedaled around the countryside, coming back just in time for a drink on the café patio by the moat.

Meanwhile, our suite was everything we hoped for. It was cozy yet elegant, with soft lighting, modern touches, and a balcony that looked out over the mountains. We spent mornings there with tea and fresh air, feeling completely unplugged from the world. On top of that, the breakfast spread was next-level. We had croissants, local cheeses, and yes, bubbly champagne to start the day right.

Naturhotel Schloss Kassegg

Best for Families. Located in the Ennstal Alps, Naturhotel Schloss Kassegg is a 19th-century castle with a quiet grandeur. We learned it was once a hunting lodge from the 1880s. The grounds stretch over four peaceful hectares, surrounded by forest and mountain air so fresh it instantly relaxed us, even though we were sore from sitting on the plane for hours.

There were so many rooms to choose from, but we chose the Superior Double Room. It was everything we had hoped for: warm, elegant, and just the right mix of modern and old-world charm. The bed was ridiculously soft, and the little sitting nook became our go-to spot for late-night chats and early-morning coffee.

Families have it easy here too, with a kids’ playroom and adventure playground, while explorers like us can borrow bikes and wander the trails nearby. During some of our spare time, we would sit on the sun terrace with coffee and snacks, soaking up the views.

Georgi Schloss is an old Tudor-style castle hotel located in Ehrenhausen. It sits proudly beside the Mur River, with ivy climbing its stone walls and a calm, regal air about it. We checked into one of the suites, and we were pleased. It had high ceilings, wooden floors, and a sleek bathroom.

After a good night’s sleep, we were pampered with the best breakfast we could’ve asked for. There were local cheeses, homemade jams, and eggs made fresh to order. In addition to that, a couple of traditional restaurants are just a short walk away, in case you need more options.

When we finally peeled ourselves away, we rented e-bikes and set off along the South Styrian Wine Road. Vineyards rolled out in every direction, and we made lazy stops at taverns for tastings and snacks. The hotel even helped arrange discounted shuttles to nearby wineries, which made the day easy.

Schloss Saalhof

Schloss Saalhof is a highly unique and authentic castle hotel in Austria. Our apartment was like a cozy little hideaway tucked inside castle walls. Everything was just right. We had a bright kitchen and a dining area, comfy beds, a spacious shower with great pressure, and a view that made our entire trip even better.

It was easy for us to relax, too, thanks to the private sauna. All we had to do was message the hostess and slip away once our kids were asleep. The sauna area was surprisingly spacious, beautifully designed, and just what we needed after hours of exploration.

Now, let’s talk about the bread roll service. Every morning, fresh rolls and hearty whole-grain bread were delivered right to our door. Our kids also love the farm life. They had a blast feeding the cows and playing on the playground. Everyone in our family certainly had fun!

IMLAUER Hotel Schloss Pichlarn

Best Activities. Up next is IMLAUER Hotel Schloss Pichlarn, a castle hotel that sits proudly above the Ennstal valley. Being family-run, the place radiates warmth, and we could feel that extra touch of care everywhere. We spent our first afternoon exploring the trails nearby, hopping on bikes and getting lost in the best way possible among the rolling green hills and crisp Styrian air.

What we loved most was that there was always something to do at the hotel. We had a lot of fun making splashes in the heated outdoor pool and later sweating it out in one of the six saunas before floating in the whirlpool. We also treated ourselves to an Ayurvedic massage, and some of us tried the golf course, too. On top of that, the hotel also hosts outdoor yoga classes.

For our stay, we got the Linden Tree Suite. It was spacious, cozy, and full of light, with a box spring bed that we agreed was the most comfortable we had ever slept in. We would unwind with a glass of champagne from the mini-bar, watching the sunset paint the peaks outside our window.

If you’re all about spa and wellness, you’ll definitely love Schloss Matzen. About an hour from Innsbruck, it’s a 1,000-year-old fortress. Yet, somehow, it manages to be both ancient and alive. And despite that, it boasts plenty of modern amenities that’ll blow your mind.

The spa tucked inside a medieval tower from the 1100s is the heart of the hotel. Imagine lying back in a candlelit chamber carved from stone, feeling centuries of calm settle around you. Between the castle yoga sessions and wellness treatments inspired by the Middle Ages, we left feeling like we had time-traveled, only with much softer towels.

Moreover, we didn’t have to travel far for food. In fact, we didn’t have to leave the hotel. The on-site restaurant offers Austrian comfort food and local wine. After dinner, we would go to the courtyard under the stars, enjoying the breeze and atmosphere.

Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron

Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is a very, very special castle hotel in Austria. It sits on a mirror-like lake with the Alps in the background, but also only a short drive from Salzburg’s Old Town. Fun fact: some scenes of The Sound of Music were filmed right here, and we couldn’t help but hum as we explored the grounds. On top of that, the Salzburg Festival was founded within these walls, too.

We stayed in the Meierhof, the charming annex next to the palace, and loved how cozy and peaceful it was. The rooms here are modern but still have that old-world warmth, with comfy beds and crisp mountain air drifting through the windows. Guests get rare access to the palace itself, so we spent a quiet afternoon exploring the grand halls, the chapel, and the Max Reinhardt Library.

Now, we have to talk about our breakfast. It was served in the grand dining room, and it came with chandeliers, fresh pastries, and a stunning view. When the weather is nice, you should dine on the panorama balcony to soak up the gorgeous mountain views and feel like royalty. Want to burn some calories? Feel free to borrow one of the bikes to circle the lake. You can also have a quick gym session on-site or take advantage of the access to the nearby pool and mini golf.

Best Modern. Nothing pampers you quite like Hotel Imperial. Set right on the Ringstraße boulevard, the hotel glows with old-world charm. Think high ceilings, chandeliers, and a quiet sense of grandeur. Yet, despite all that history, the hotel boasts a wide array of modern amenities. For instance, the rooftop fitness and wellness studio. It’s one of our favorite spots on the property. There, you’ll find a modern space with a sauna, spa, and gym.

All of the accommodation options are nothing but lavish, and we were in love with our Imperial Suite. With silk-covered walls, ornate antique furniture, and a bathroom lined with gleaming marble, it was pure luxury. Since we booked the suite, we also got our own personal butler, which really says it all about the level of service here.

You don’t have to question the dining experience either. Breakfasts at Café Imperial were very satisfying, with strong Viennese coffee and a slice (or two) of their famous Imperialtorte. Dinner at Restaurant Opus was an elegant affair, but the real magic happened later at the Imperial Bar, where we would sip cocktails while soft jazz filled the room.

Best 5-Star. Hotel Schloss Mönchstein is one of the most highly rated castle hotels in Austria. The castle sits quietly among the trees on the Mönchsberg hill, with the whole city spread out below and the Alps shimmering in the distance. We loved the overall atmosphere there. The air was crisp, the view was stunning, the pool was sparkling, and we forgot there was a city just below us.

When we first arrived, we immediately wanted to check out our suite as it looked so gorgeous in pictures. Waiting for us was a welcome drink, fresh fruit, and a homemade Guglhupf cake! As expected, our suite was spacious and equipped with luxurious amenities, including a marble bathroom with a jacuzzi.

We also enjoyed our meals at this hotel. For breakfast, we would head to Restaurant Schloss Mönchstein. Expect flaky croissants, strong coffee, and a mix of Austrian and international dishes. For dinner, we highly recommend splurging at The Glass Garden. As the name suggests, it’s a restaurant inside a sleek glass dome overlooking Salzburg’s twinkling lights.
