Best Location. Tucked between the buzzing Gaslamp Quarter and the laid-back charm of Little Italy, Hotel Republic San Diego gave us the perfect downtown home base with the sparkling San Diego Bay just a short stroll away. We loved how easy it was to hop between waterfront breezes, taco spots in Little Italy, and the nightlife scene in Gaslamp. They were all within a 10-minute walk. And thanks to the bikes parked right outside, getting around felt like part of the adventure.
Sure, there’s no pool, but the 24/7 fitness center made up for it with sleek machines and free access that made it easy to squeeze in a workout. Food-wise, the hotel didn’t disappoint. Trade, the lobby-level restaurant, serves up a fresh California-inspired menu, but our favorite spot was hands-down Topside Terrace. Perched on the rooftop, it felt like an urban oasis. Cozy cabanas, desert plants, and those sweeping views over downtown toward the bay made it the ideal place to unwind.
We stayed in a Standard King Room, and it had everything we needed, and then some. The built-in window seat was the perfect nook to sip coffee and take in the city below, and we appreciated how the room was both stylish and practical, especially with the easy-to-reach USB ports and outlets. But what really took it over the top was the view. San Diego’s skyline is lighting up the bay at sunset, and it was absolutely unforgettable.

Best for Business. The Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Gaslamp/Convention Center ended up being exactly what we were looking for. Location-wise? Amazing. We could stroll to the Convention Center, the buzzing Gaslamp Quarter, and our favorite, the stunning San Diego Bay, all without breaking a sweat. Whether you’re in town for meetings or just want to soak up the city’s energy, this spot puts you in the heart of it all.
One of the best things about this hotel is The Nolen. Their rooftop bar absolutely blew us away. Watching the sun dip into San Diego Bay while sipping cocktails was a fantastic experience. That panoramic view stole the show. We also grabbed a few bites at the Bistro downstairs. If you’re traveling for work, there’s a business center too, but trust us: it’s the view that’ll stay with you.
We splurged a little and booked the Executive King Suite, and honestly? Worth every penny. The space was calm, quiet (major shoutout to the soundproofing), and had a cozy sitting area where we could just lounge and look out over the city. Mornings started right with in-room coffee, fast Wi-Fi, and some lazy channel-surfing on the flat-screen TV. It had all the comforts we needed without feeling cookie-cutter.

Best Rooftop Bar. The San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter was a total win for us. Nestled right in the middle of the vibrant Gaslamp Quarter, the hotel gave us front-row access to everything. Petco Park was literally across the street, which made catching a game feel spontaneous. Plus, spots like Balboa Park and the Convention Center were just minutes away.
However, the one that stole the show was the rooftop bar. With sweeping views of the bay and skyline, it’s the kind of place where time slows down and every drink tastes better. The on-site restaurant served fresh, flavorful California-style dishes, and the lounge downstairs was perfect for a casual drink. Even the fitness center was solid. We squeezed in a quick workout before heading out to soak up more of the view.
Moreover, our room had the perfect balance between style and comfort. It had all the little things we love, like a great coffee maker and a big flat-screen TV for winding down. However, the real highlight was the view. Waking up to the sparkling San Diego Bay from our window made our mornings feel extra special. If you’re looking to level it up, go for the suite. Best Views. The Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina instantly wowed us with its unbeatable location, which is right on the edge of the bay. Waking up to sailboats gliding across the sparkling water and the skyline shimmering in the morning light? Unreal! We loved how easy it was to get around, too. The Convention Center was just steps away, and the zoo was only a quick ride from the hotel.
The food at this Marriott in San Diego was incredible. Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion hit the spot with its bold, island-inspired flavors, while Marina Kitchen’s breakfast buffet became our morning ritual. Having a Starbucks downstairs was a bonus for our caffeine cravings. We also made the most of the resort-style outdoor pool and bar, squeezed in a couple of workouts at the gym, and ended each day with peaceful walks along the marina, soaking in those golden-hour bay views.
We stayed in the Superior King Room, and honestly, the view alone was worth it. Looking out over the San Diego Bay from our window felt like a scene out of a travel magazine. The room itself was spacious and super comfortable, with a cloud-like bed, flat-screen TV, a coffee maker for our morning fix, and plush robes we didn’t want to take off.

Best All-Suite. We recently stayed at the Marriott Vacation Club, San Diego, and we were glad we made that decision. First of all, this all-suite hotel is perfectly positioned. We were just a short walk from the lively Gaslamp Quarter with its nightlife, restaurants, and art galleries. We even strolled to the USS Midway Museum without breaking a sweat, which was a nice change of pace from our usual beach escapes.
One of our favorite parts of the stay? SHAKE, the hotel’s restaurant and bar. We grabbed breakfast there most mornings, and one night we lingered over cocktails and a great dinner. The vibes were upbeat but relaxed, just how we like it. We also made use of the 24-hour fitness center, which was clean, well-equipped, and perfect for squeezing in a quick workout.

Best Luxury. We stayed at The US Grant, a Luxury Collection Hotel, and it didn’t take long for us to fall in love with this gorgeous hotel. The location is unbeatable, as it’s right in downtown near the lively Gaslamp Quarter, with easy access to Balboa Park, Petco Park, and the San Diego Zoo. Whether we were exploring the city or just enjoying the buzz of the neighborhood, everything was close by and easy to get to.
This hotel has three on-site spots for dining and drinking. That said, dinner at the Grant Grill was a real treat. The vibe was upscale but relaxed, and the menu focused on fresh California flavors. While vegetarian mains were a bit limited, the starters and sides more than made up for it. We wrapped up the night with a drink at the bar and a quick stop at the gym.

Our Signature Suite was spacious and elegant, with two king beds, a cozy living area, a four-person dining table, and an oversized bathroom with a walk-in shower.
