Charybdis Fountain, Sunderland, UK

Charybdis was created by the water sculptor William Pye in 2000 for the luxury Seaham Hotel and Spa, near Sunderland in Northern England. William Pye thought up the swirling vortex design, which uses high-pressure water pumped within an acrylic cylinder. Charybdis was a water nymph punished by Zeus and turned into a whirlpool that swallowed up ships in Greek mythology.

Vaillancourt Fountain, San Francisco

This fountain has been the center of controversy since the day it was installed. Created by Armand Vaillancourt in 1971, it is actually entitled “Québec libre!” It is representative of the relationship between Vaillancourt’s art and his political convictions. It is a huge concrete fountain, 43 meters (140 ft) wide and 11 meters (36 ft) high. The night before its inauguration, Vaillancourt inscribed Québec libre! in red letters, to note his undying support for the Quebec sovereignty movement and more largely, his support for the freedom of all people.
