A whisper of the past
When we first stepped into The Ahwahnee, it was like stepping back in time. We instantly realized why it’s considered one of the finest national park lodges in the country. The whole place, even the lobby lounge, oozes historic charm. Speaking of which, the distance from The Ahwahnee to Yosemite National Park Big Oak Flat Entrance is only 31.4 mi or 55 minutes away!
It’s not just the grand architecture, a masterpiece from the 1920s, that complements Yosemite’s natural beauty so perfectly. The hotel was built with luxury in mind, and it delivers. The décor and the dining all feel sophisticated yet in perfect harmony with the park’s setting.
But what really got us was the sense of history that washed over us here. Yosemite is steeped in time. The granite cliffs are ancient, and the sequoia trees have witnessed millennia. The Ahwahnee adds another layer to that. When we were there, we could almost imagine presidents like Taft, who has a Yosemite viewpoint named after him, or John Muir, who championed the park’s preservation, walking these very halls. And it’s not just imagination. Staying at The Ahwahnee puts you in the same footsteps as royalty. Even Queen Elizabeth herself stayed here!

Luxury for every explorer
Having just explored the awe-inspiring landscapes of Yosemite, we can confidently say The Ahwahnee offers travelers the perfect post-adventure lodge. The variety of accommodations here caters to every traveler’s desire.
Those looking for classic elegance can opt for the hotel rooms, which are a great value for money. But if you want to step up your stay, consider the upper-floor or junior suites. Imagine unwinding after a hike by a crackling fireplace or sipping coffee on a private balcony with breathtaking views.
Since we craved a more intimate experience, we stayed at one of the cottages for three nights. Tucked away amidst the towering trees, our cottage was perfect for our dream secluded escape. We picked the cozy Standard Cottage, and it was even better than we imagined. Sleeping on the king-sized bed was divine, and there was a small, cozy sofa for quick relaxation, too.

Dine and drink
No matter where we were at The Ahwahnee, we were always impressed. Every space and area felt like a grand lodge fit for royalty. For instance, let’s talk about the Great Lounge, which is the heart of it all. We were welcomed with enormous fireplaces that crackled like a warm hug when we were there. If you want to sink into a chair with a book in the evening, it’s the place to be.
We were also awed by the Winter Club Room and the Mural Room. These tucked-away spaces are the perfect places for a more intimate gathering. They’re just off the main lounge and filled with fascinating historical bits and bobs, making them ideal for a small group catching up. But the crown jewel for us is definitely The Ahwahnee Dining Room. Those 34 ft ceilings dropped our jaws, and the giant windows made us feel like we were practically dining right there amongst the Yosemite beauty.
And if you want something a little less formal, The Ahwahnee Bar has fantastic outdoor seating where you can grab a drink and a bite while taking in the views. Of course, we ended each of our nights there.
“With a drink in our hand and gorgeous views, we always ended up spending more time than we planned at the bar.”

Rejuvenation awaits at The Ahwahnee
The Ahwahnee spoiled us rotten with its perfect combination of outdoor adventure and in-room pampering. After a day of hiking and exploring Yosemite’s beauty, the pool was a welcome sight. We truly felt like we were swimming in a postcard. The fresh mountain air filled our lungs, and the spacious pool allowed us to unwind completely. If swimming isn’t your cup of tea, you can still unwind on the lounge chair. Plus, the convenience of having towels provided made everything even more effortless.
However, the true indulgence came with our in-room massage. Nothing could beat the feeling of melting into our room’s comfort and completely de-stressing. The spa menu offered us a variety of massages, and we were able to soothe our tired muscles and truly relax. Ahwahnee Lodge in Yosemite truly knows how to pamper its guests.

Convenient location
Finally, the location of this hotel also blew us away. The Ahwahnee Lodge is nestled right at the east end of Yosemite Valley, meaning we were always accompanied by iconic sights no matter where we went. Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Glacier Point – all these legendary landmarks were visible just by strolling around the hotel grounds. We did no need to have a long trek before we could soak in those mesmerizing views.
Best of all, a super convenient shuttle bus stop right out front could transport us wherever we wanted. If you want to explore other parts of Yosemite Valley, you can easily hop on and get whisked away to new adventures. The location is perfect for both relaxation and exploration. We loved to marvel at the sights right outside our window and catch a ride to discover more hidden gems of the valley.
