It’s very tempting to camp outdoors in the winter, isn’t it? However, one of the main reasons holding anyone back, including us, might we add, is the cold that is pervasive throughout. And long winter nights in cold and dark tents were enough to put us off any tent camping ideas we had until we heard of heat tents. The best hot tents are shelters that can accommodate wood-burning stoves for heat. In fact, living in such tents transformed our camping experience and future ideas drastically. Such tents have fire-resistant stove jacks sewn into the walls, thus making it possible for us to put stoves and run stovepipes or chimneys through them. And with that rig, we were able to not just burn wood as a heat source but even dry clothes and cook food!
All in all, heat tents make for memorable winter camping experiences without freezing your butts off, especially if you’re going to the best camping sites in Wisconsin during winter. From frozen boreal forests to conifer hillsides, going just about everywhere is possible with these tents. Not only are the best in the business lightweight, but they’re perfect for backpacking too. So, what are you waiting for? Here are the best products we’ve rounded up to stay warm and dry during winter camping.

Guide Gear Base Camp Tent
13
The Guide Gear Base Camp Tent is one of the largest wall tents that we’ve seen and used. In fact, it was able to accommodate a 5.5-inch diameter stove pipe, making it perfect for our group to go camping in the dead of winter. There are a lot of things we liked about this tent, such as the fire-retardant panel that we could use when the stove was on. Moreover, the tent also has a very tall peak height, along with the sidewalls being taller than most other tents. Plus, the five mesh windows, the door, and the air vents on the ceiling ensured ventilation, with the zippered door even being a mesh one. We loved the bathtub-style floor, which meant that the extra-durable floor material extended up the tent’s side. That way, when water streamed towards the tent during storms, it didn’t soak the walls.
- Capacity: 4-6 people
- Material: Flame-retardant material, aluminum, alloy steel
- Weight: 62lbs/ 28kg
- Peak Height: 120in/ 10ft
- Number of Doors: 2
Pros
- The bathtub floor is very durable.
- It comes with a fire-retardant mat.
- It even has two awnings for additional outdoor space and tons of interior space with plenty of headroom.
Cons
- It might be on the heavier side for those who want to hike.

Whiteduck Alpha Canvas Wall Tent
12
Best canvas tent. The Whiteduck Alpha Canvas Wall Tent is one of the best heavy-duty canvas tents with a wooden stove on this list. It’s not a cheap tent in any sense – the smallest 8×10 ft one costs a whopping 2,050 USD! However, it does make for an excellent durable option for luxury camping, especially for large family events. This tent boasted a free-floating floor and is supported by an aluminum frame and a pitched roof. What we really liked is that the entire tent packs down small into a carrying case, allowing us to move it easily at least. Besides the durable YKK zippers, the PVC-dipped mesh on the three windows also lent additional durability. Wrapping up the features are the extra fasteners on the doors, which allowed us to keep them secure even when high winds were blowing about.
Check out what the Huntin’ Fool has to say about this amazing tent in this detailed YouTube video review.
“Since this tent is large enough to accommodate so many people and requires 2-3 people to set it up, it suited our needs perfectly. Not only is it insanely large, but also it’s very, very durable.

Danchel Outdoor B5 4-Season Pro Canvas Tent
11
The Danchel Outdoor B5 4-Season Pro Canvas Tent is one of the most uncomplicated large tent setups we’ve seen that has the capability to accommodate wood stoves. This tent boasted a single central pole that could support the tent’s shape. What’s more, it even came in two sizing options, both of which have very tall peak heights and are, thus, very large. Plus, this tent, which is made from 100% waterproof canvas, has the entire floor zippered in. That said, we did need to unzip the floor to use the stove on bare ground. Or you could also purchase a heat-resistant mat. And despite being thin, the tent walls have been treated to resist mold and UV rays. Wrapping up the features are the three mesh zippered windows and the door.
- Capacity: 2-8 people
- Material: 330GSM Cotton Canvas
- Weight: 60lbs/ 27kg (2-person tent)

Pomoly HEX Plus Tent
10
Best tent for small family camping. We were looking for great heated tents for family camping and couldn’t have been happier than with the Pomoly Hex Plus Tent. This waterproof tipi-style family camping tent allowed us to use a stove jack for warmth within. While we’ve rated this as a family tent, allow us to clarify that it’s the best small-family tent, which means two parents and one or two kids. Plus, it’s just small and lightweight enough not to be a huge burden to those with children like us. That’s because it’s made from waterproof 300D silver-coated Oxford material and packs down into a small 8×2-inch bag. Besides being insulated and easy to clean, this tent also has a stove jack that’s 4.7-5.5 inches in diameter that works with most stoves. The best bit? The roof vents exist all the way around the tent’s top.

Most lightweight. We loved the inner/outer tent design of the lightweight OneTigris Northgaze Stove Tent. The inner tent is made of mesh, and the outer tent is made from 40D silicone-coated nylon with a 3000mm waterproof rating. So, it was durable and waterproof from the outside and well-ventilated on the inside. In fact, we recently used this tent with a tent stove for backpacking in the winter, and it worked out great. What helped with the durability were the high-quality YKK zippers and the lightweight aluminum center pole. There were even two roof vents for insulation and tons of tie-outs that helped keep the tent in one place during stormy nights. It’s what makes it one of the best canvas tents with a stove jack.

The Unistrengh 4 Season Waterproof Cotton Canvas Bell Tent comes in not one or two but five sizing options for heat camping in the winter. We invested in the three-person size one, and we’ve never been happier camping out in the snow. For one, the tent is made from 300gsm cotton canvas with double-stitched seams for additional strength. What’s more, the canvas has been treated with UV and a water-repellent finish, which kept us safe in all seasons. The bonus was that the entire canvas tent and all of its accessories could be packed into one carry bag so we could carry it easily. The best bit? Wintent 4 Season Waterproof Teepee Tent

Best budget. Just because we were tent shopping didn’t mean that we didn’t have color choices, like with the Wintent 4 Season Waterproof Teepee Tent. This tent came in not just multiple sizes but even colors, including white, green, beige, and brown. We chose the green as it went with the conifer forest we decided to go winter camping in, but we loved this minimalist tent for more than just the color. For one, it boasted a removable inner made from mesh, which created enough sleeping space for up to four people. It can fit a hot stove with a 4.7-inch stove pipe diameter. Since it’s made from Oxford material and has two doors, it was very easy for us to get in and out of the tent. Not only did the Oxford material make the tent waterproof and lightweight, but it was also treated with polyurethane material.

Best two-person tent. The 4-season Playdo Waterproof Cotton Canvas Bell Tent did check all the boxes when we were looking for a good stove tent for camping in the winter. For one, it came with a 5-inch stove jack hole as well as electric cable access. So, we were even able to pitch tents in campsites wherever we found them. What’s more, the cotton canvas that the tent is made from has a thickness of 300 gsm. If that wasn’t enough, the floor of the tent was zipped in, which made it easy for us to remove and wash it separately. We loved that the tent was supported by galvanized steel support poles, which meant extra sturdiness. The best bit? It did very well in high winds and took just 20 minutes to set up, which was pretty impressive for heavy and bulky canvas tents.

If you’re looking for 2-4-person tents, then look no further than the Preself 4-Person Lightweight Tipi Tent. This lightweight backpacking tent with a stove jack boasts a quick setup and is one of the best tents for camping in the backcountry. We loved the waterproof polyester (2000mm rating) build of the tent, which is something that’s unusual for backpacking tents. What’s more, it has a very tall peak height of 7.25 ft, which meant that we could finally stand upright inside the tent and not have to slouch! While the tipi design and slanted walls did eat into the usable floor space, there’s still lots of space for sleeping and sitting. Finally, the tipi design withstands rain and wind easily.

What’s more, the tent is made from a durable 70D nylon material, which also has an excellent waterproof rating of 3000mm. Thanks to the use of high-quality zippers, we were able to easily open and shut the tent whenever needed. How To Choose The Best Hot Tents?
Material
One of the most important things to look for in heating tents or tents with stove jacks is the material they’re made up of. You need to look for tents made from high-quality materials that have been treated for fire retardancy. When we went looking for such tents, the most common materials were Oxford or canvas, but silnylon is also an excellent option. What’s more, the entire tent should be treated to be flame retardant. Plus, more importantly, there needs to be an entirely fire-proof square-shaped material directly surrounding the stove pipes.
Types
When we talk about the material, we also have to talk about the kind of tents you’re looking for, which depends on the intended use.
- Canvas Tents – Canvas is one of the commonest materials to use for tents with stove jacks as it’s thick and naturally durable. Although the setup process of canvas tents could be complicated, and they themselves tend to be heavy, they make for a very durable shelter.
- Pop-Up Tents – These tents with stove jacks are intermediate ones between canvas and backpacking tents in terms of difficulty to set up and weight. They’re usually shaped like standard family camping tents.
- Backpacking Tents – The best hot tents for backpacking are usually small ones with stove jacks. They’re generally made from thin materials and don’t have a floor sometimes. In fact, some backpackers use separate groundsheets for them to sleep on.
Fire safety and ventilation
Since stoves within tents could generate tremendous amounts of heat, even fire-retardant materials will benefit from having some extra help. For instance, it’s a great idea to ensure that there’s an additional fire mat behind and beneath the stove. It’s a great way to catch any stray sparks when the stove is being loaded, and it makes for a secondary layer of insulation between the tent floor and the heated stove. Additionally, it’s a great idea to make space for a fire extinguisher, too, as it’s the best way to put out fires in case of emergencies.
Ventilation
As always, ventilation is always important in tents, but it becomes all the more important when you throw a stove into the mix. Carbon monoxide and smoke are serious health hazards, especially since they could begin to accumulate inside the shelter. And if one spends enough time breathing it in, then damaged lungs are just one of the things to worry about. So, always ensure that there’s proper airflow through the heated tent to prevent any health concerns.
Tent specifics
There are some tent specifics we looked into as well, such as whether the tent was freestanding or not. When camping on frozen grounds, bell-shaped tents aren’t the best option, as they need to be staked properly. In such cases, framed tents that are freestanding are always better. Also, we looked at the packed size and the weight of the tents. While most tents are usually bulky and heavy, there could be minute differences. For instance, car camping tents are heavier than backpacking tents, and the latter are also more packable.
Overall durability
Finally, one of the biggest safety concerns is that tents could be shaken or blown over, and the stove could touch a flammable surface. For this reason, we made sure that we invested in a high-quality tent with a sturdy design.
How heated do such tents get?
Heated tents with stove jacks could go into the 70s Fahrenheit in the middle of winter. In warmer temperatures, the tent can easily be heated into the 80s or 90s Fahrenheit.
Is heated tenting safe?
Yes, absolutely. Heated tenting with stove jacks is safe as long as one follows some common-sense safety precautions. What’s more, the tents need to be set up properly, need to have fire-retardant fabrics, and need to have the stovepipes and stoves cleaned from time to time.
Can I put a stove jack in any tent?
No, stove jacks need to be put in tents specifically made for designated stove jacks, are made from fire-resistant materials, have proper ventilation, and have been tested for fire safety.
