The location was spot on, as we could walk to the Gaslamp Quarter in about 10 minutes and Balboa Park was only a short drive away. Having the zoo and all those museums so close made it super easy to fill our days without stressing about transportation.

Despite being a budget hotel, our Queen Room was bigger than we expected and had a fresh, modern feel. After long walks under the San Diego sun, that blast of cool air-conditioning was heaven. It had all the essential amenities, along with some extras like crisp linens and tons of clean towels.

Though there are no fancy amenities, the rest of the hotel was convenient. Thanks to the 24-hour front desk, we could roll in late without any hassle, and the free parking downtown was a total score. Plus, it’s pet-friendly, so you can bring your pup along.

Old Town Inn

When we booked Old Town Inn, we honestly weren’t expecting much. It looked simple, but the location sold us. Turns out, it was perfect. Just a quick walk to Old Town (hello tacos and margaritas) and only a few minutes’ drive to the beach or SeaWorld, it gave us easy access without the headache of downtown traffic. Plus, free parking in San Diego? That’s already a win.

The room itself was cozy, which is exactly what we needed. We had our coffee maker ready in the mornings, free Wi-Fi for mapping out adventures, and a comfy bed waiting at night. Some rooms even have fridges or kitchenettes!

Best Budget. The Best Western Seven Seas could be the perfect jumping-off point for your San Diego trip. Old Town was just a couple of miles away, and we could get to SeaWorld or the zoo in under 10 minutes. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better location.

When we had had enough, we would go back to our King Room. The free Wi-Fi was fast and reliable, and we also had a mini-fridge for snacks and a coffee maker that saved us from early-morning grumpiness. Nothing overly fancy, but it was definitely comfortable. For us, it checked the right boxes.

The amenities were spot on, too. We loved having breakfast at the Seven Seas Cafe. It offers diner-style plates that hit the spot. Whenever we wanted a drink or two, we would head to Zack’s Bar. The pool area was definitely where we spent the most time, though: plenty of loungers, a hot tub to sink into, and even a ping pong table for a quick match. On top of that, there was a poolside bar!

La Quinta by Wyndham San Diego Mission Bay

We wanted a convenient spot that’s not in the thick of downtown traffic, and La Quinta by Wyndham Mission Bay turned out to be just right. Within 15 minutes, we could be at the Convention Center or the airport, which made our trip so much smoother.

We went with the Deluxe King Room, and it was better than we imagined. First of all, the pillow-top mattress was extremely comfy, and we loved having a mini-fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker right there. The vibe was also modern, and everything in our room worked perfectly.

This hotel is big on free stuff. Our breakfast was free, and it was surprisingly good. We also squeezed in a quick workout at the fitness center and even lounged by the outdoor pool, which all could be accessed for free. Best of all, parking was also free. If you’re in San Diego for Sea World, there’s no better hotel than this. Say hello to the Holiday Inn Express San Diego Sea World Area. Pulling right off Interstate 8, we were checked in and unpacked within minutes. SeaWorld was practically around the corner, which made our day there completely stress-free, and having Old Town and Downtown just a quick drive away was a blessing.

It didn’t take long for us to decide to stay in the Standard Room, which was modern, clean, and surprisingly spacious. We loved having a mini-fridge and microwave for late-night snacks. And if you want a bigger space, feel free to stay in one of the suites, which come complete with a kitchenette.

We also loved the breakfast! The spread had all the essentials, and the pancake machine was a quirky little highlight we couldn’t resist trying. Best of all, we didn’t have to hunt for parking or pay extra for it. It was such a lifesaver in San Diego!

Hyatt Vacation Club at the Welk

We have a feeling you’ll love staying at Hyatt Vacation Club at the Welk. Located in the Escondido hills, the resort is surrounded by wide-open green space that makes you forget you’re just a short drive from San Diego’s big-name spots like the Zoo, Safari Park, and SeaWorld. Plus, free parking right outside our suite? Such a small thing, but it made life so much easier.

We’re not exactly golf pros, but the two courses here made us want to pick up a club anyway. Designed by David Rainville and Jim Brown, they’re more like scenic trails with sweeping views. And when the sun went down, the vibe completely shifted. We caught a Broadway-style show at the on-site theatre, and it honestly blew us away. It was cozy, polished, and way better than we expected from a resort performance.

Furthermore, our One Bedroom Mountain Suite was fantastic. It had a full living area, a separate bedroom, and a kitchen stocked with everything we needed. Having a dishwasher and plenty of space to spread out made it easy to feel at home. It’s truly a 10 out of 10.

Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina

Best Views. San Diego always feels like a mini escape for us, but staying at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina made it unforgettable. The hotel sits right on the bay, so we could walk to Seaport Village in minutes, explore the Gaslamp District, or hop over to Balboa Park without much planning. The seasonal free parking package was amazing, too. We didn’t need to stress over extra fees.

As one of the best Marriott hotels in San Diego, Food definitely became part of our adventure here. Dinner at Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion was a total treat. The bold, island flavors hit the spot. Marina Kitchen’s breakfast buffet was great as well. And having a Starbucks in the lobby? Let’s just say our caffeine needs were always met. When we weren’t eating, we were by the pool, sneaking in a quick workout, or strolling the marina at sunset.

Finally, our Superior King Room tied everything together. The view of the bay from our window honestly felt like something you would see in a travel magazine. The room itself was roomy, cozy, and had all the little comforts we love: a ridiculously comfy bed, a coffee maker for slow mornings, and plush robes we basically lived in.

Carté Hotel

Carté Hotel could be the perfect spot for your San Diego trip, too. Being in Little Italy, we were always surrounded by amazing food, art, and bay views. Plus, it’s one of the top hotels with free parking in San Diego. We drove down for the weekend, so the Park & Stay offer was great. We didn’t have to spend much time parking, as one room gets free parking for one car.

For our stay, we decided to go with the King Room. It came with floor-to-ceiling windows that made the skyline part of the experience. We loved waking up to that view, coffee from the Keurig in hand, while planning the day ahead. The bed was ridiculously comfy too, and the Wi-Fi worked flawlessly.

The hotel itself was full of surprises. We enjoyed dining at the restaurant downstairs. The seafood was fresh! We also loved sipping wine before heading up to the rooftop bar for sunset cocktails. The access to the giant fitness center was a bonus, too. It was 28,000 sq ft, and we stretched it out in a yoga class and even snuck in a swim at the rooftop pool.

Looking for a centrally located hotel? Take a look at Hilton San Diego Mission Valley. Fashion Valley was just a quick drive away, which made sneaking in some shopping way too easy, and the stadium was only about 10 minutes out. Since we had a car, the Park & Stay package made things simple. No juggling parking fees or hunting for a spot. This package offers free parking for one car per room.

Speaking of which, our King Room turned out to be extremely cozy. The big flat-screen TV was perfect for late-night unwinding, and the bathroom was surprisingly stylish with granite counters and green-certified toiletries. We also liked having the work desk and ergonomic chair, even if it mostly became our snack station instead of a workspace.

One of our favorite parts of the stay was Polanco Kitchen & Bar downstairs. Their Baja-inspired menu and craft margaritas were so good, and happy hour became our little ritual before heading out for the evening. On top of that, the hotel also boasts a modern gym for workouts and a business center.

The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows

Best Historic. We still can’t get over our stay at The Lafayette Hotel, Swim Club & Bungalows. As one of the best historic hotels in San Diego, walking through the doors felt like stepping onto a 1940s movie set. It was glamorous, a little cheeky, and dripping with character. We kept joking that we were extras in an old Hollywood film. Quick tip: parking at the hotel comes with a fee, but if you don’t mind a short stroll, there’s free street parking just a block behind in the neighborhood.

The real magic for us was in the room. Our Family Suite checked all the right boxes. Think tiger-striped canopy beds, snake-shaped reading lamps, even hand-painted rococo toilets. It was over the top in the best possible way, somehow both luxurious and playful. The king bed was ridiculously comfy, and the little bunk bed nook turned into a fort for the kids.

Oh, the food! We started our days at Beginners, the retro diner that had us hooked on their banana bread pudding French toast (dangerously good). Dinner at Quixote was a total showstopper. The crab corn doughnut with caviar still makes our mouths water. Moreover, drinks flowed wherever we turned: classic cocktails in the lobby, tropical sips by the pool, and an in-room bar that basically begged us to play mixologist.

Best Location. Searching for hotels in Downtown San Diego with free parking can be almost impossible. Thankfully, there’s Hotel Republic San Diego, which is in the middle of everything. Karl Strauss Brewing is literally around the corner (we went there for a pint almost right away), and the Gaslamp Quarter is just a short walk. Even the convention center is within reach. Best of all, the hotel’s “Fuel Up Your Stay” deal covered valet parking, which saved us the headache of downtown meters and garages. On top of that, you can get around easily with the hotel’s complimentary bikes.

We booked the Standard King Room, which was stylish but still cozy. We liked the eco-friendly vibe, and since we travel with our pup sometimes, it was good to know pets are welcome here. If you want to spoil yourself, you can try the in-room dining. Nothing screams self-pampering quite like gourmet food arriving straight to your door.

While we loved exploring the city’s gems, some nights it was hard to leave the hotel’s rooftop. Topside Terrace Kitchen & Bar gave us those perfect city views with a drink in hand, and it quickly became our go-to spot before turning in. The hotel also has a solid gym if you’re feeling active, and the staff always went out of their way to help us with dinner reservations and tips.
