No matter where in the world you’re sailing, where you stay prior to and after your sailing cruise is one small but critical detail that could make or break your trip. The Port of San Diego is one of the most important ports along California’s coastline. Sitting on the picturesque San Diego Bay, the port is home to not only the cruise ship terminal, but also the Broadway Pier, the Maritime Museum of San Diego, and the USS Midway Museum. Given how important the port and its location are, we had no dearth of options for San Diego hotels near cruise port. Not only did we find a bunch of reliable chain options, but there were also a few luxurious finds.

It allowed us to enjoy amenities such as swimming pools and excellent restaurants, as well as explore San Diego a bit before and after we boarded and got off our cruise. Plus, we were able to enjoy stunning views of San Diego Bay, rather than having to race across town and worry about traffic and arriving late. The Westin San Diego Bayview

We begin with The Westin San Diego Bayview, which is a straight 15-minute walk from the Port of San Diego down the W Broadway boulevard. So many of the higher-up rooms and suites, as well as the restaurant and even the rooftop pool, offered fantastic birds-eye views of the San Diego Bay and the harbor.

This newly transformed Westin outpost has a plethora of amenities on the property, including a fabulous signature restaurant that serves American fare. Besides a complimentary airport shuttle, the hotel also has a heavenly outdoor swimming pool along with a hot tub. A business center, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a concierge desk, a coffee cafe, and a casual bar round up the amenities.

We basked in the glory of the newly renovated rooms at suites at this Westin outpost, all of which came with Starbucks coffee, complimentary waters, HDTVs, and en-suite bathrooms with rainforest showers.

Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego Downtown/Bayfront

It’s hard to imagine a Residence Inn with a kickass location and even more amazing views, but they’re both true at the Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego Downtown/Bayfront. Sitting right across from the Port of San Diego, this Residence Inn outpost also happens to be one of the best long-term hotels in San Diego. However, the unbeatable location was topped by only one thing: the sweeping and panoramic views of the Bay and the harbor. Not only were there views from the rooms and the restaurant, but the most special view was from the rooftop pool, which happens to be one of the best hotel pools in San Diego! Everything else about the hotel was amazing: we had easy mornings with the complimentary breakfast, we borrowed the bikes to take a spin along the waterfront, and we had the perks of living in San Diego’s Downtown.

What we loved most, though, was the digs, which offered us both comfort and convenience. When we were ready to wind down, we loved the comforts offered by our spacious one-bedroom suite, which came with a fully equipped kitchen. So, when we didn’t feel like leaving our digs, we’d enjoy a languorous swim with bay views and enjoy quiet nights in our spacious apartment-studio.

Hotel Republic San Diego, Autograph Collection

A 15-minute walk from the Port of San Diego brought us to Hotel Republic San Diego, Autograph Collection. One of the best hotels near Gaslamp San Diego, it was the perfect base for us to explore the city before and after our cruise.

This hotel lived a former life as a W, but its vibe in the form of Hotel Republic couldn’t be more different. Relaxed and polished, the vibe here matched the comfy digs, which boasted a modern, nautical ambiance and a delightful blue-and-white color palette. While even the standard rooms were spacious, the suites were even more so, especially if you wanted a bit more space. We booked a Corner Suite, which didn’t just have more space but also boasted amazing, unobstructed views.

The rest of the hotel was impressive too, especially the free Wi-Fi, which allowed us to stay connected and plan our itineraries without any hassles. Evenings were reserved for the charming rooftop space, where we’d sip on drinks before heading out into the Gaslamp Quarter. Did we mention that the rooftop Trade Restaurant and Lounge also hosts free yoga classes on Sundays, besides serving delicious food? Yep.

Hampton Inn San Diego Downtown

The Hampton Inn San Diego Downtown is one of the best Downtown San Diego hotels. We couldn’t have asked for a better location; the hotel was right on the cusp of Downtown, Little Italy, and Harborview, fronting the Waterfront Park on Embarcadero. So, it was a mere 10-minute walk to the Port of San Diego and its cruise terminals. In fact, we could see the bay from multiple areas in the hotel, including our balcony! The best bit? There was a trolley station right next to the hotel!

Along with the location, we loved everything about this hotel. While it was a simple yet reliable chain hotel, it had all the amenities we needed for the few days before and after our cruise. Our days began on a high note with complimentary breakfasts every morning. It was a fulfilling spread with just the right amount of variety. What’s more, there was also a well-equipped fitness center and a lovely outdoor pool with direct and unobstructed views all the way through to San Diego Bay. Even the rooms and suites were amazing, spacious, and equipped with mod-cons, with our One-Bedroom King Suite offering superb views of the ships at the harbor!

Urban Boutique Hotel

Best boutique hotel. The Urban Boutique Hotel, which happens to be one of the best hotels in San Diego near Balboa Park, was also a mere 15-minute walk from the Port of San Diego. This charming European-inspired gem blended old-world elegance with modern comforts, with the city’s best attractions within walking distance.

While we had an array of choices in rooms and suites, we especially loved our King Room, which was actually a lot more spacious than we imagined. Nevertheless, all rooms were amazing and came with a slew of mod-cons, including plush beds, flat-screen TVs, free W-Fi, and in-room coffee/tea facilities for cozy morning pick-me-ups. Moreover, the premium suites add more space with living rooms and cozy sofas, especially for larger groups.

Aside from its prime location, the hotel had secure and paid off-site parking and a 24-hour reception. Even though they didn’t have a restaurant on the property, they served a fantastic continental breakfast in the lobby every morning. What could be better?

The Sofia Hotel

Most historic. The Sofia Hotel is a straight 15-minute walk from the Port of San Diego, right in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter. In fact, it’s one of the most historic hotels in San Diego, and for a good reason. Formerly the Pickwick Hotel, the Sofia Hotel’s origins go way back to the early 1900s, designed in Gothic Revival style for transiting passengers. In fact, it was the first hotel in San Diego to have en-suite bathrooms! In 2006, it was reimagined as the Sofia Hotel.

Today, its rooms and suites are contemporary to boot, offering a host of creature comforts such as fridges, coffeemakers, and sleek furnishings with sexy purple accents. While all rooms feature microwaves, flat-screen TVs, and designer bath products, the suites add additional living space and whirlpool tubs. While we could book in-room spa services for an extra charge, the Wi-Fi was included in the daily resort fee.

Other amenities include the 24-hour fitness center, a lovely yoga studio, and a chic American brasserie with an outdoor terrace where we could enjoy the food with views.

ITH San Diego Adventure Hostel

Best hostel. We were looking for a hostel near San Diego’s cruise port, and we were in luck! Behold the ITH San Diego Adventure Hostel, which was a mere 20-minute walk inland from the cruise port, in Little Italy. In fact, it put us close to Balboa Park and its attractions as well, so what could be better?

This International Travelers’ House outpost, one of the city’s many, sits in a Victorian structure in the heart of Downtown San Diego. It had both dorms and private rooms on offer, which were spread across the main Captain’s House and the historic White House annex. Not only did they have luggage storage and private lockers, but they also had immaculate shared and private bathrooms stocked with complimentary bath products. Whether it was the four/sex-bed female-only and mixed dorms or the private rooms, the beds were very comfortable.

Besides hosting a social hour every evening, the hostel even offered breakfast, while also having a communal kitchen where we could prepare our meals. There was free Wi-Fi everywhere, which was a huge plus point. We could mingle and swap stories with fellow travelers in the many indoor and outdoor communal lounge spaces. Thanks to the coin-operated laundry, we didn’t have to worry about packing a huge bag either. Did we mention that they have a daily activities wall for things happening around the city, as well as a roster of activities?

Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina

Best marina views. If you want to stay close to the port harbor but with some different views, there’s no place better than Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina. One of the best Marriott hotels in San Diego, the hotel’s location right across the Embarcadero Marina, right on the edge of San Diego Bay, was unbeatable. There was nothing better than waking up to views of the sailboats, either anchored or gliding past the harbor, with the port of San Diego being a mere 20-minute picturesque walk along the Embarcadero’s walking waterfront promenade.

Every single amenity at this Marriott outpost was amazing. There were four restaurants on the property serving everything from American to Asian cuisines, with the breakfast buffet at Marina Kitchen taking the cake. There was even a Starbucks at the hotel, helping us stay fueled and caffeinated. Aside from the scenic promenade and the fitness center, our favorite place was the resort-style outdoor pool and bar, where we’d enjoy a swim with those golden-hour bay views.

The room and suite choices here, especially the ones overlooking the marina, like our Superior King Room, were excellent. Besides being spacious, all rooms came with flat-screen TVs, cloud-like beds, coffeemakers, the plushest robes in luxe bathrooms, and space and comfort.

InterContinental San Diego by IHG

Sitting right across from the Port of San Diego is the InterContinental San Diego by IHG. It sits on the Pacific Highway, thus ensuring excellent connectivity to the rest of San Diego and beyond. Plus, the port is a mere five-minute walk down W Broadway and the Harbor Drive, so what could be better? Interestingly, it sits almost on the cusp of the harbor and Little Italy and happens to be one of the best hotels by Little Italy, San Diego. So, it’s not surprising that the 19-storied hotel offered stunning views of the San Diego Bay, the cruise port, and the city skyline.

There were many amenities that we enjoyed during our stay here. The outdoor pool was especially nice, as we’d relax on the lounges with drinks in our hands. Aside from the state-of-the-art fitness center, the hotel has a wonderful signature restaurant as well as two other restaurants serving delicious Italian and American fare. Did we mention that they even have an outdoor yoga terrace? Yep.

While there were many room and suite choices, we decided to go with the One-Bedroom Suite. Not only did it offer more space with a living room and a wet bar, but it also boasted floor-to-ceiling windows with breathtaking views of the port harbor.

SpringHill Suites by Marriott San Diego Downtown/Bayfront

Imagine staying somewhere with a lovely rooftop and a swimming pool with bird’s-eye views of San Diego’s cruise port. We’re talking about SpringHill Suites by Marriott San Diego Downtown/Bayfront, which is a five-minute walk southeast of San Diego’s cruise port. In fact, its rooftop pool is one of San Diego’s best hotel pools, complete with daybeds and poolside service. Another feature of the rooftop is the Harbor & Sky bar, which also offers breathtaking views of the cruise port and San Diego Bay. The rest of the amenities are no less impressive, with a fitness center with equally stunning views and free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

We had a wide range of choices when it came to the rooms at this hotel, all of which were suites. Moreover, they all came with plush beds, ensuite bathrooms, flat-screen cable TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, and coffeemakers. In fact, some suites, like ours, even featured views of the ocean, the Bay, and the cruise port.

Wyndham San Diego Bayside

Closest hotel. Sitting at the top of the list is the Wyndham San Diego Bayside, which also happens to be one of the best hotels in San Diego. The Port of San Diego is right across the street, so we could spy views of San Diego Bay and the port from everywhere in the hotel, right from the rooms to the restaurant. In fact, a four-minute walk brought us to the cruise terminal! Additionally, other amazing sights along the waterfront were a short walk away.

There are a ton of amenities on the property that we absolutely enjoyed. Besides the two restaurants, the property even had a lovely outdoor pool with views of the bay and the greenery. A poolside fitness center, a free shuttle service to the Seaport Village and San Diego Zoo, and wonderful breakfasts every morning sure made our stay all the better.

The rooms and suites were no less amazing, with all of them featuring large windows and private balconies with views of the bay and the cruise port. Besides that, they came with all the standard amenities, such as flat-screen TVs, plush beds, luxe bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi access.

Where to Stay In San Diego Near The Cruise Port?

San Diego’s cruise port is located rather perfectly and is surrounded by some of the city’s best and most happening and buzzing neighborhoods. First, we have the Harborview district just north of the port. It’s anchored by large, grassy Waterfront Park, overlooks the Embarcadero walking and cycling path, and is home to the Maritime Museum of San Diego. Just inland of it is the lovely Little Italy, a walking-friendly and chic neighborhood. It’s packed with cool cocktail bars, restaurants, stylish hotels, quaint piazzas, and clothing boutiques.

To the south of the cruise port is the Marina, which sits right along San Diego Bay. It’s a mix of entertainment and retail complexes, hotels, as well as the lovely Embarcadero Marina parks. Finally, there’s the utterly gorgeous and historic Gaslamp Quarter, a lively downtown neighborhood and the most historic part of San Diego, and one of the top things to do in San Diego. It’s famous for its nightlife with cocktail lounges, dive bars, and clubs, as well as theaters, restaurants, and the Horton Plaza Park with grassy lawns, an interactive fountain, and coffee and ice cream vendors.
