There are a million reasons you like to stay in a particular hotel, the most obvious one being the amazing digs and the amenities coming a close second. One such wonderful amenity that stands out today is breakfast, which is the best way to start the day. And when breakfasts are complimentary, it’s the cherry on top! When we visited “The Birthplace of California,” San Diego, we couldn’t help but resist looking for the best San Diego hotels with free breakfast. We were delighted to find a wide range of hotels offering an equally wide range of breakfast spreads. They ranged from luxurious stays and chain brands to boutique hotels and even B&Bs.
What’s more, their breakfast spreads varied wildly; while some focused on local fare, others had us oohing and aahing over the continental delights. That being said, they all had one common thread — the breakfasts were out of this world. While each meal is a privilege, here’s a list of the best stays in “America’s Finest City,” where the breakfasts went above and beyond.

Glorietta Bay Inn
11
Best B&B breakfast. We begin with a lovely historic and romantic stay in San Diego that’s also one of the best hotels on Coronado Island, San Diego, the Glorietta Bay Inn. It’s home to the glorious “Glorietta’s breakfast,” which is served between 7 and 10 am every morning. While it’s served in the historic Music Room, we enjoyed them on the outdoor verandah overlooking the picturesque Glorietta Bay on a lovely sun-kissed day.
The breakfast is an extensive, exhaustive one and features three main categories: hot protein dishes, bakery selections, morning sips, and continental favorites. Hot protein dishes rotated throughout the week and included egg frittata/scrambled eggs/egg patty/cheese omelet, turkey/ham sausage or a sausage patty, and hard-boiled eggs. Additionally, it had made-to-order hot pancakes every day! Bakery selections included sourdough, wheat, and white toast, bagels, muffins, and freshly baked pastries. Moreover, the menu also featured granola, cottage cheese, different kinds of yogurt, assorted oatmeal and dry cereals, and fresh seasonal fruit. Topping everything off was a fantastic selection of morning sips, including milk, hot chocolate, assorted hot teas, decaf and regular coffee, espresso, and apple and orange juices. Ooof!

Pantai Inn

Pantai Inn is one of the best hotels in Pacific Beach, San Diego. Firstly, we loved it for its Bali-esque atmosphere and the innately authentic Southeast Asian ambiance and vibe. However, loved it all the more because it boasted one of the best breakfasts we’ve ever had on holiday.
First of all, they have an actual chef prepare it, with handwritten menus telling us what the chef would be preparing the next day! Secondly, we could enjoy either in the dining room or on the private patio with sweeping ocean views. Moreover, breakfast even boasted an extensive beverage bar with a variety of teas, some of the best gourmet coffee we’ve had on holiday. Freshly squeezed juice, milk, bread, fresh fruit, and yogurt accompanied the tea and coffee. The freshly baked goodies and hot entrees and dishes changed every day, and it even had a rotating selection of a big bowl of fresh fruit and herb-and-fruit-infused waters.
Did we mention that they also had snacks and drinks in the lobby 24/7? Yes!

Residence Inn San Diego Del Mar

If you’re visiting Legoland with the kids, then Residence Inn San Diego Del Mar, which sits just 20 minutes south, is perfect. Firstly, it’s one of the best 2-bedroom suite hotels in San Diego, which meant that we had tons of space for our family with kids, adults, and elders. However, what took the cake was the full-sized American breakfast buffet that was served every morning. Although it was usually what most Marriott hotels offer, the spread was delicious and included both hot and cold items. It included a good selection of bagels and bread (for toasting), hot dishes including made-to-order eggs and oatmeal, and great coffee. The breakfast spread, including healthy options, was served from 6:30-9 am on weekdays and from 7-9:30 am on weekends. The icing on the cake was the housekeeping and breakfast staff, who were very helpful and friendly.

Best hotel breakfast. Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown is one of the best Hilton hotels in the San Diego Area. It’s also one of the best Hilton stays to offer amazing made-to-order complimentary breakfasts, which are offered between 6 and 9 am on Mondays to Fridays, and 7 and 10 am on weekends. Breakfast featured a made-to-order omelet station, where we enjoyed the fluffiest, yummiest omelets in the world. What’s more, the station also had potatoes, sausages, bacon, and pancakes on offer. Continental delights included juices, muffins, cereal, scrambled eggs, yogurt, fresh fruit, and even scrambled eggs and a variety of breads.
Not just breakfast, but this Hilton outpost even hosted a complimentary evening reception between 5:30 and 7 pm every day. They had a fantastic selection of chips and dip, vegetables, as well as spirits, signature cocktails, wine, and beer!

1906 Lodge

One of the best boutique hotels in San Diego is the 1906 Lodge, where the complimentary breakfast was better than most dining experiences we had in the entire city. The signature breakfast, which was included in the stay, features a huge spread of hot and cold delights. The highlight is the specialty hot entrée prepared by the innkeepers, with favorites including the popular Mushroom and Three-cheese Strata, Baked Florentine, and the Adella Chili Bake. Plus, they also offered freshly baked goodies such as almond cakes, maple pecan scones, and even delicious carrot cake muffins. Topping off this delicious spread is fresh fruit, juice, coffee, and tea. Oh, and did we mention that they serve complimentary mimosas from 8-9:30 am every morning? That sure is an incentive to wake up early!
What we loved about the breakfast here is that travelers on special diets will usually find many items that cater to their dietary needs on the menu. However, since the inn and the kitchen are small, not everyone might find all items that are nut-free, vegan, or gluten-free. So, we could even store some items of our choice in our room fridge!

Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter

One of the best Marriott hotels in San Diego also happens to serve kickass breakfasts to start the day on a high note. We’re talking about the Residence Inn by Marriott San Diego Downtown/Gaslamp Quarter. This Marriott outpost might be from its budget chain, but it offers a complimentary hot breakfast daily to all guests.
Between Monday and Friday, breakfast timings are 6-9 am, and on the weekend, they’re 6:30-9:30 am on the second-floor mezzanine overlooking the lobby. Moreover, the breakfast staff is extremely friendly and warm, and they strive and work hard to keep the area as spick and span as possible. Coming to the actual spread, the breakfast includes a wide variety of hot dishes, including made-to-order eggs and hot side dishes. Additionally, there are also cold continental favorites such as oatmeal, assorted cereals, fresh fruit, a range of juices, and assorted milk. And let us tell you, the coffee here was amazing, far better than we’ve had at some of the best-known coffee chains! Check out the details here.
Besides being less than five minutes from Petco Park and the Convention Center, this Marriott outpost also has a 24/7 market, an on-site bar, laundry facilities, a fitness center, and a rooftop pool with great views. That, along with the fact that our suite was spacious and came with a living room and kitchen, was a huge plus for us.

Beach Terrace

Best beachside breakfast. Carlsbad is just north of San Diego’s La Jolla, making it the perfect base for exploring the region if you don’t want to stay thick in the middle of the city. Of them all, Beach Terrace is one of the best hotels in Carlsbad, San Diego, for more reasons than one. The topmost reason: the decadent breakfast spread that awaited us every day in the morning.
“A massive breakfast spread with all our favorites and a beach and sea view? The Beach Terrace was the best!”
WOW Travel
Not only was the daily breakfast a vast spread of all our favorite delights, but it was also complimentary, served between 6:30 and 9:30 am every day. It included delicious hot items such as fresh croissants, as well as healthy touches like seasonal fruit-infused waters. Plus, the locally-sourced produce was always welcome, and the ideal way to experience San Diego’s regional fare. While this breakfast is light and perfect, there’s also a larger spread for those who want to bask in bed a little longer and like their mornings slow. For them, there’s an à la carte menu, with options including banana nut bread, deviled eggs, avocado toast, and salmon. Oh, and did we mention that they serve this amazing breakfast between 7 and 10 am and deliver it right to your door? Yes!
The private stretch of beach aside, the hotel does wonderfully well on other amenities, too. These included beach umbrellas and chairs, and our favorite, the heated outdoor swimming pool and hot tub. Oh, and you’re going to especially love the ocean view rooms here, which come with private porches. Nevertheless, all rooms are stylish and cozy, and come with coffeemakers, wet bars, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs.

Ocean Park Inn

Staying in La Jolla was one of the best experiences of our lives, and the Ocean Park Inn played a huge role in that. Firstly, this lovely inn sits right on the sandy shores of Pacific Beach, right in front of the Crystal Pier. However, its standout highlight is that they helped us begin our days right by offering a huge complimentary breakfast spread. They had all our absolute continental breakfast favorites; think sausages, bacon, made-to-order eggs, and even waffles, hot and fresh off the waffle iron. Moreover, there were even other fantastic alternatives if waffles aren’t your thing, like tea, coffee, yogurt, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and equally freshly delivered pastries. If that wasn’t enough, we’d enjoyed this breakfast from 6:30-10 am every day with mesmerizing views of the Pacific Ocean. What could be better?
The rest of the hotel was no less amazing. Firstly, the beach was a hop, skip, and jump away, and that too, when we weren’t spending our time at the beach-facing outdoor heated pool. No wonder it’s hailed as one of the best beachfront hotels in La Jolla, San Diego. The digs were excellent, especially the sea-facing ones, and all of them came with mod-cons, mid-century aesthetics, and wonderful little nautical touches. A fitness center, a hot tub, and free Wi-Fi everywhere round up the amenities.

Lamplighter Inn & Suites at SDSU
3
One of the best long-term hotels in San Diego is the Lamplighter Inn & Suites at SDSU, which was perfect for our week-long stay in the city. However, what helped us make our decision was the fact that they offered a wonderful complimentary continental breakfast. It featured a plethora of delicious options, including hard-boiled eggs, toast, bagels, pastries, and even make-your-own waffles, which the kids ended up loving. What’s more, they also had other continental staples such as yogurt, cereal, fruit, milk, tea, coffee, OJ, and more. So, it was the perfect fuel for us when we were headed out the door for an entire day of sightseeing and San Diego adventures. The best bit is that breakfast was available from 6-10 am, which meant that everyone, from early birds and late risers, could take advantage of it.
Everything about this family-friendly hotel was great, especially the studio units, which had full kitchens. Since we were traveling with the kids, it was a blessing to be able to cook for ourselves and save us some money. Thanks to the game room and the lovely outdoor pool, the entire family, including the children, had a grand time. Finally, there were evenings when we’d simply relax and unwind by the poolside grills and enjoy a dinner under the stars.

It might be a budget hotel chain, but that doesn’t stop the Homewood Suites by Hilton San Diego Mission Valley/Zoo from offering a complimentary hot breakfast every day for its guests! While sometimes there were some items on repeat, a major portion of the menu usually changed daily, which was a huge plus point for us. It included a variety of hot items, including made-to-order eggs at the egg station, sausages, waffles, and breakfast burritos. Moreover, it even had cold continental items such as a variety of breads, cereal, milk, etc., as well as tea, coffee, and other selections of beverages. The highlight was the staff, who took breakfast service very seriously and handled it very well.

Besides the complimentary breakfast, this all-suite hotel even had complimentary evening receptions with free cocktails. Furthermore, all suites came with well-equipped and well-stocked kitchens, spacious living rooms, and free Wi-Fi everywhere. If all that wasn’t enough, the place even had an on-site fitness center and a heated swimming pool. Did we mention the BBQ area? Yep.

Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast

Best overall breakfast. Sitting at the top of the list is what is one of the best breakfast makers on this list, the Hillcrest House Bed & Breakfast.
Not only is the breakfast at the B&B always included in the room rate, but it’s also healthy, it’s casual, and it’s aptly called the “Southern California Lifestyle Buffet!” The selection includes hot items like whole-grain toast, warm hard-boiled eggs, and homemade muffins from host and owner Ann. What’s more, it also includes fresh items like sliced bananas and the California fresh fruit tray. Continental favorites like granola, yogurt, and OJ aside, there’s also peanut butter and homemade fruit preserves. The best bit is that the beverage station is open 24/7 and features a selection of herbal teas, decaf, and coffee. Plus, it was served in the wonderfully cozy and decked-out dining room. Now that’s what we call a breakfast!
This B&B is also one of the best hotels in San Diego near Balboa Park and is a 15-20-minute walk away. Moreover, we had the choice of seven rooms and suites, making our stay experience very intimate. Plush linens, towels, and private bathrooms with complimentary bath products made our stay all the more amazing.
