Best hostel. We begin with what is a fantastic, affordable, fun option in the heart of Downtown San Diego, the HI San Diego Downtown Hostel. It comes from the able stable of Hosteling International, and its San Diego outpost lies just a 5-minute drive and a 12-minute bicycle ride from Balboa Park’s southern fringes.
Staying here felt like we had a front-row seat to everything cool and amazing about SoCal (Southern California). Firstly, the staff was warm and super-friendly, making our stay comfortable and sharing maps and insider tips that made exploring San Diego exciting. Next, the hostel brimmed with unending personality, peppered with local art and bold murals, making it more than just a place to stay. Our mornings began on a high note thanks to the complimentary breakfasts in the shared kitchen. It was a great place to sip amazing coffee, mingle with fellow travelers, and swap travel tales. Plus, there were many places to unwind, including a workspace, a game room, and the shared lounge.
