Let’s kick off this list with the La Galerie French Quarter Hotel. Staying here, we were just a short walk from some of the city’s most iconic spots: a quick 9-minute stroll to Jackson Square and about 10 minutes to catch some live jazz at Preservation Hall. While Bourbon Street’s nightlife and the Mardi Gras festivity are about a mile away, we appreciated being slightly removed from the hustle and bustle, while still having easy access.

After contemplating the accommodation, we ended up with the Standard King Room. It was exactly as we thought: modest and bright. We liked the character of the room, with its hardwood floors and exposed white brick walls. It gave the room a nice, modern feel while still feeling historic. The room had all the modern amenities we needed, which was a plus.

What about the amenities? The hotel has a casual restaurant and bar, so anyone who wants a quick bite and drink doesn’t have to venture out. We also made use of the fitness center, which was equipped with all the important equipment.

Grenoble House

Grenoble House is set in a beautiful 19th-century building, making it one charming, historic hotel. We were just a minute’s walk from the Musee Conti Wax Museum, which was a fun little diversion. Bourbon Street, with all its vibrant energy, was an easy 8-minute stroll away. Of course, being in the French Quarter, the excitement and festivities of Mardi Gras were practically on our doorstep.

For our stay, we booked the Grand King Suite, and it exceeded our expectations. This two-level suite was incredibly spacious, offering a generous living area and a fully equipped kitchen, which was a real plus for us. The blend of modern amenities with the antique décor created a unique and comfortable atmosphere. It felt both luxurious and homey.

The hotel also has some lovely outdoor spaces. We enjoyed relaxing on the brick patio, and the courtyard with its pool and hot tub was a welcome oasis. The exterior corridors also had benches, providing more spots to sit and enjoy our spare time.

Audubon Cottages

Audubon Cottages is the kind of hotel that can effortlessly please even the most discerning travelers. Stepping into the property felt like entering a secluded oasis. These 18th-century Creole cottages, clustered around a sparkling swimming pool, offered a surprisingly quiet escape in the heart of the French Quarter. It was a feat we wouldn’t have thought possible.

One of the unique aspects of the Cottages is the emphasis on privacy. It was difficult to gauge the other guests, as there weren’t any public spaces beyond the pool. This wasn’t a place for socializing with other travelers; it was about enjoying our own private retreat. Speaking of which, we booked the two-bedroom cottage. It was perfect for us, and both queen beds were incredibly comfortable, dressed with super soft linens.

While there isn’t an on-site kitchen, the option to order breakfast in our shared courtyard from the neighboring hotel was very convenient. Enjoying a leisurely breakfast in the courtyard became one of our favorite parts of the day. The staff also elevated our experience. Having a dedicated concierge/butler at our disposal was super helpful.

Inn on St Peter

What sets the Inn on St Peter apart from other hotels near Mardi Gras parade route is the fact that it’s housed in a beautifully restored 1805 Spanish-style Creole townhouse. Apart from that, staying here allowed us to be just three minutes away from Bourbon Street. Though nearby, we were still far enough to have a peaceful night’s sleep.

Speaking of sleeping, we really loved our room. We had all the modern conveniences you can think of. From free Wi-Fi to a coffee maker, you name it. We also loved the spotless marble bathroom, which felt very luxurious. If you need more space, you can book one of the suites.

What truly made the Inn on St Peter special for us were the building’s unique architectural features. The Spanish influences were evident everywhere, especially in the hidden courtyards. These were truly tranquil oases, shaded by what we learned were century-old trees. It was the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax. The large wrap-around veranda was also a wonderful feature.

Sheraton New Orleans Hotel

Set on Canal Street, the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel‘s location is a real sweet spot. We were just a short 0.3-mile stroll to the Aquarium of the Americas and about 1.5 miles from the vibrant Mardi Gras World. What we especially appreciated was its proximity to the French Quarter. It was close enough to easily walk and enjoy all the Mardi Gras action, but thankfully far enough away to avoid the constant craziness, particularly at night. Being a 50-story building, you can also stay on a higher floor to avoid noise issues.

For our stay, we opted for the Club Level King Room, and it was definitely worth it. The access to the Club Lounge was a real treat. We enjoyed the complimentary Wi-Fi, which was reliable and fast, and the continental breakfast was delectable. The evening appetizers were great, perfect for a pre-dinner snack or a light meal.

The hotel has a lot to offer. If you decide to stay here, make sure to check out the bistro with its New Orleans-inspired cuisine. We loved the on-site bar, which was designed to resemble a French Quarter courtyard. For those who like to keep up with their fitness routine, the 24/7 fitness center is equipped with modern equipment. And the rooftop pool with its sundeck? Absolutely fantastic!

International House Hotel

Best Boutique. The International House Hotel truly deserves more attention. It’s situated in a beautifully restored beaux arts building that once housed a World Trade Center. While we were more than a block away from the thickest Mardi Gras crowds, we found ourselves conveniently close, less than three blocks in three different directions, making it easy to dip into the excitement and then retreat to a more tranquil atmosphere.

Our room, the Panoramic King, was simply stunning. The designer linens and furnishings gave it a truly sophisticated feel, and the flat-screen TV and free Wi-Fi were much appreciated. What really made the room special, though, were the lovely views that surrounded us. It truly lived up to its “Panoramic” name. There are also suites on the property, which add living areas and crystal chandeliers. The Penthouse even boasts a piano!

The hotel’s amenities were top-notch, too. The plush bar and lounge looked was one of our favorite spots to unwind. The availability of spa treatments and a gym was also a definite plus. For those traveling for business or hosting events, the four meeting rooms and ballroom are well-equipped.

Hotel Peter and Paul

Most Charming. Among all of the hotels close to Mardi Gras New Orleans, Hotel Peter and Paul is a standout. Located in the trendy Faubourg Marigny district, it offered a perfect balance. We were just a short six-minute walk from a tram stop. What we especially appreciated was its location slightly removed from the main Mardi Gras crowds. Even during the festivities, we found the area had a more relaxed, local vibe, which suited us perfectly.

For our stay, we booked the Convent Classic Room, and it was elegant. The antique furniture throughout the hotel, and especially in our room, added so much character. The room itself was well-appointed with all the modern necessities. But what really made our stay special were the extra touches in our room. The private entrance gave us a sense of seclusion, and the quiet street view was a welcome respite from the city bustle. The in-room bathtub was the cherry on top, creating the perfect atmosphere for a romantic getaway.

We also enjoyed the hotel’s sophisticated restaurant. The contemporary cocktails were expertly crafted, and the American cuisine was delicious. Beyond the dining, the hotel also offered activities like yoga classes and cycling, making sure we were always busy and entertained.

Le Richelieu Hotel

There are so many reasons why we recommend the Le Richelieu Hotel. Nestled amongst the beautiful Creole townhouses of the French Quarter, the location couldn’t have been better. We were just a couple of blocks from the vibrant Bourbon Street nightlife, which was perfect for experiencing the energy of the city, but far enough away to ensure a peaceful night’s sleep.

Our room was a delightful step back in time, filled with beautiful antiques in a traditional style. It felt very classic New Orleans. However, the real highlight for us was the balcony overlooking the pool. It was a lovely spot to relax and soak up the atmosphere. And if you don’t mind splurging, you can stay in the suite, which comes with a separate living room and full kitchen.

We enjoyed the hotel’s common areas as well. The cafe, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and complimentary coffee, was our go-to spot when we wanted to plan our adventures. It overlooked the courtyard and the year-round saltwater pool, too. There was also a lounge bar, which was a great place for a quiet drink in the evening.

Dauphine Orleans Hotel

Best Location. Staying in downtown New Orleans can be tricky – you want to be close to the Mardi Gras action but not in the middle of the Bourbon Street chaos. For us, the Dauphine Orleans Hotel hit the perfect balance. Being just a block away from the craziness meant we could easily access the vibrant atmosphere without being overwhelmed by noise. It felt like we were in a truly central location, but with a sense of calm and poise.

Our Standard Room in the Main House had a charming, rustic feel. The yellowish tones and lower ceiling gave it a cozy, almost country-like vibe. We were pleasantly surprised by the in-room amenities, as they didn’t skimp on anything. We had bottled water, free Wi-Fi, and a coffee maker, along with all the usual tech. The Tempur-Pedic bed was a definite highlight. Additionally, the bathroom was well-stocked with the hotel’s own toiletries.

Now, let’s talk about the lovely saltwater pool. Surrounded by lush greenery and just steps from the bar (which was once a brothel), it was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a cocktail in the sun. We loved the series of enclosed courtyards; they gave the hotel a truly exclusive feel. There were also convenient water stations, a computer terminal in the lobby, and a fitness room available.

Our recent stay at the Hotel Provincial, a prime location for Mardi Gras revelry, was great. Its proximity to the Ursulines Station streetcar stop (a mere three-minute stroll) made exploring the city a breeze. While nestled in the heart of the French Quarter and within easy walking distance of the vibrant Mardi Gras festivities, the hotel offered a peaceful retreat from the bustling crowds.

The hotel itself, a beautifully restored historic building, exuded charm and character. Our room, though compact, was undeniably stylish, adorned with tasteful Southern antiques and period furnishings. While we missed out on a balcony (some rooms boasted this enviable feature), the overall ambiance was undeniably sophisticated. The hotel’s inviting atmosphere was further enhanced by its relaxed bar, where we enjoyed happy hour on a couple of occasions. However, the true highlight for us was the outdoor spaces. Two swimming pools provided a welcome respite from the Louisiana heat. We particularly adored the tropically landscaped courtyard, complete with a soothing fountain and comfortable patio furniture.

Alder Hotel Uptown

Best for Tranquility. The Alder Hotel Uptown has everything it takes to be a top hotel in NOLA. It has a charming, retro vibe that travelers love. But what we love the most is its proximity to the Mardi Gras parade routes. Two major parades, Iris and Rex, are actually nearby. And on other days, you can easily avoid the crowds. We also loved being so close to Freret Street, as we were able to explore the fantastic selection of restaurants.

During our stay at Alder, we spent our nights in the King Room. The highlight of our room was none other than the private balcony. It also had all the essentials we needed: free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a coffee maker. Families will also appreciate the fact that kids aged 12 and under can stay for free with an adult.

The hotel also offered some convenient amenities. Parking was complimentary, which is always a plus in a city. We also found a 24-hour convenience store and a coin-operated laundry. When we wanted to beat the heat, we would simply take a dip in the outdoor pool.
