Highlights of Journey
But of course, there’s a lot more to do while walking this trail. Many popular long-distance trails have stages, like the 8 days walking the Amalfi Coast, and here are some highlights of those stages.
Naxxar
Naxxar is where you will start your journey, a picturesque town situated in the northern side of Malta. As soon as you get to the town you’ll feel like you stepped back in time. Make sure to walk around its narrow alleys before departing to your next destination, you’ll be able to enjoy the interesting architecture and the limestone houses with colorful wooden balconies.
You can’t miss the imposing Parish Church of Our Lady, a masterpiece of Baroque architecture, and the Palazzo Parisio, a grand mansion surrounded by lush gardens.
Here are other hiking trails you may want to check out:
- Naxxar Heritage Trail: Explore historical sites, including the Naxxar Palace and the Olive Oil Press.
- Tal-Maqluba Trail: Descend into the Maqluba sinkhole, a natural wonder hidden within the cliffs.
Golden Bay
While you can take a different approach, I highly recommend you don’t miss out on Golden Bay since it’s one of the best beaches on the island. With its golden sandy beach and crystal-clear waters, it is a paradise for beach lovers.
Make sure you take a leisurely walk along the shoreline, breathe in the salty air, and soak up the sun. The nearby cliffs offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Here’s a popular hike in the area:
- Golden Bay to Għajn Tuffieħa: Follow the coastal path to Għajn Tuffieħa Beach, passing through fragrant wildflowers and rugged terrain.
Xaghra
Your last stop will be Xaghra, which is located on the island of Gozo and is packed with dramatic cliffs and fascinating caves.
Once there, head to Xerri’s Grotto, and explore its underground wonder adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. Nearby, Ninu’s Cave offers a glimpse into prehistoric times.
You should stay a few days here if that’s the case you’ll take a day trip to Comino island and relax on its stunning beaches.
Here are some attractions worth checking out:
- Xaghra Cliffs Trail: Traverse the rugged coastline, marvel at the azure sea, and discover hidden coves.
- Calypso’s Cave Trail: Legend has it that this cave was the home of the nymph Calypso, who enchanted Odysseus in Homer’s “The Odyssey.”
