The first hotel on this list is the Kasa the Addison San Francisco. The location is more than ideal, with Lafayette Park, Japantown Peace Plaza, and the nearest cable car stop all within a short walking distance. This proximity allowed us to easily explore the city and immerse ourselves in the local culture. Our split-level studio was cozy and well-appointed. The private bathroom, washing machine, and tea and coffee maker were convenient amenities that enhanced our stay. We particularly appreciated the well-equipped kitchenette, which allowed us to prepare our meals and enjoy the freedom of dining in.
Beyond the studio itself, the hotel’s overall ambiance was great. The Victorian-style architecture made it feel more elegant, and the relaxed atmosphere made us feel right at home. The friendly and helpful staff were always available to assist us with any questions or requests.

Best Service. Up next is the Courtyard by Marriott San Francisco Downtown/Van Ness Ave. Set on a bustling thoroughfare, the hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of major attractions like the Asian Art Museum and Civic Center BART station. While technically not in Japantown, it’s only a few minutes away. That’s why we think it’s a great alternative for travelers looking for SF Japantown hotels.
We stayed in the suite, and it was fantastic. It was more spacious than we imagined, and we had our semi-separate, ridiculously luxurious living area. Of course, there were the standard amenities too, like the mini fridge, coffee-making facilities, and safe.
One of the highlights of our stay was the upscale diner with its retro vibe. It was a great place to grab a delicious meal after sightseeing. The hotel also offers meeting and event space for those traveling for business or attending conferences. For fitness enthusiasts, the 24-hour gym is worth checking out. However, we were particularly impressed with the guest service agents. They were always friendly and helpful, whether we needed assistance with printing boarding passes or arranging transportation.

Best Budget. For budget travelers, Chapter San Francisco could be their newest favorite hostel. As a tech-savvy traveler, we were immediately drawn to its phone-based system for everything from information to connecting with other guests. It’s a refreshing change from the usual hostel setup.
The dorms here are categorized into several classes: Economy, Business, and First Classes. We opted for a First Class Pod in a 2-bed mixed dorm. While it’s a bit smaller than a traditional dorm room, it’s surprisingly comfortable. It reminded us of a small chamber with a sleek, transparent door. The bed was surprisingly plush, and the overall design was modern.
The location is prime, right in the heart of the city near Lafayette Park, Japantown, and other cool neighborhoods. We had a blast staying at this hostel, as we were able to explore and experience the local culture easily.

The bar was another highlight of our stay. The selection of drinks was impressive, the service was excellent, and the bartenders were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. What about dining? The Thai dishes at Nari were to die for!
