We begin with Antica Locanda dei Mercanti, one of the most romantic stays we found in the city center of Milan. This gorgeous hotel was tucked in a discreet 18th-century structure a mere 10-minute walk from the Duomo. Pressing a buzzer and climbing a flight of stairs got us to the 1st-floor reception area, where we had the choice of 15 rooms across 3 floors. We chose a third-floor room, which had original Venetian marble floors. What’s more, all third-floor rooms boasted private rooftop garden terraces with greenery! Our morning cup of coffee and breakfast on the terrace is how we’d start our days.

The rest of the place was excellent, right from the helpful and warm staff to the amenities, which included a small communal area-cum-breakfast room. What’s more, all floors have their own small libraries with books in multiple European languages. A tour desk and a ground-floor gym wound up the offerings here.

Room Mate Guilia

It’s impossible to talk about great stays in Milan’s city center and not include Room Mate Guilia. The hostel-hotel is designed by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola, who drew inspiration from Milan’s 1960s residences. So, we found tons of bright pops of color, local photography and artwork, and — get this — color-coded rooms. Think hues of green, light blue, and terracotta, with juxtaposing geometric designs and bright color palette furnishings. The vintage touches were excellent, like armchairs and stools and octagonal, full-length mirrors. The mod-cons like modern bathrooms, USB ports, and Nespresso machines certainly made our stay very comfortable.

We were impressed when it came to the amenities too. Firstly, they were one of the few places we’ve seen in the world that served breakfast until midday! So, we were actually able to lounge around on the days we didn’t have a sightseeing schedule. A treatment room, a sauna, and a small basement gym with a steam room round up the amenities here.

Matilde Boutique Hotel

How would you like to stay right in front of the Piazza Duomo? That’s where we stayed, and it was awesome! Welcome to the Matilde Boutique Hotel, a hotel with a wonderfully desirable location on a quiet street off the main road leading to the Duomo Square. Apart from the fantastic location, the rooms and suites were a huge plus. We loved everything from the all-white color palette with teal green accents to the mod-cons. Think sleek bathrooms, plush beds, flatscreen TVs, and even room service, which was very rare to come by in a Milanese boutique hotel close to Duomo.

If you were impressed by the location and the digs, wait till you check out the rest of the hotel. One of our most favorite places was the shared lounge/bar/restaurant, the Granary Coffee & Kitchen. It sat fronting the road leading to Duomo, making it a fantastic place to people-watch and decide the best time to visit the cathedral. Plus, they served all meals, and even aperitifs, brunch, and high tea, so we didn’t even have to leave the hotel the day we decided to lounge a bit. A buffet breakfast, a 24-hour front desk, and free Wi-Fi throughout the property wrapped up the offerings here.

Rosa Grand Milano

Sitting right behind the Duomo Cathedral, Rosa Grand Milano was a stylish four-star hotel sitting across three structures. One of them was a 1906-built convent-turned-hotel space with more than 300 rooms, making it one of the largest stays we’d seen near the Duomo. We had the choice of three styles of rooms and suites; some with white Italian marble bathrooms and others with neutral hues and dark fittings. Our one-bedroom apartment had a separate living and bedroom, a sleek bathroom with bathrobes, and even a fully equipped kitchenette where we could cook meals. Did we mention the minibar and the amazing views? Yep. That’s why it’s one of the top-rated hotels in the Milan city centre.

Even though it was a historical hotel, we loved the availability of amenities. These included the gym, steam room, and terrace with deckchairs, the latter of which would stay open during the warmer months. Aside from business facilities, the hotel also had the most scrumptious buffet breakfast spread as well as drinks at the Grand Lounge and Bar. Two other restaurants serving Italian and international cuisine round up the amenities here.

Ostello Bello Milano Duomo

Best hostel. Ostello Bello Milano Duomo was a fun, lively hostel just a 10-minute walk westward from Duomo. Besides boasting an excellent location and boatloads of character, the quiet surroundings ensured that we got our fair share of rest and sleep. Choose from a host of dorms and private rooms, all of which came with not only quirky decor and designs but also private bathrooms. In the dorms, we found well-designed bunks with spacious underbed drawers, plug sockets, reading lamps, and USB ports for our convenience.

The buzzy, happening bar with a great vibe was the epicenter of all activity. Affordable drinks, a lively event roster that included everything from DJ sets and quizzes to karaoke nights and pub crawls, and a fantastic crowd made it a superb place to hang out. It even had table football, board games, and Nintendo Switch, along with a piano and three guitars! So, it was “the” social space to mingle. Aside from a co-working space, the hostel even had free city walking tours, free charges and portable Wi-Fi routers, a terrace with hammocks and beanbags, and a kitchen for cooking light meals!

Hotel Canada Milano Urban Chic

One of the best hotels in Milan, Italy, city center is Hotel Canada Milano Urban Chic, which also happens to be best hotels in Milan with parking. It was very useful since we’d rented a car to get not just around Milan but continue our road trip across the rest of the country. Not only did we get a discounted price but also, we got safe covered parking in a garage right behind the hotel. The best bit? Access in and out of the hotel was very easy, and we were merely 10 minutes south of Duomo.

What else did we like about the hotel? Everything! Firstly, our days would start off with the complimentary continental breakfast, which was a delicious spread. What’s more, we also had access to free Wi-Fi and a 24-hour reception, allowing us to get in and out of our room at any time. The modern rooms and suites impressed us too, especially since they had private bathrooms, minibars, and large windows.

B&B Hotel Milano Sant’Ambrogio

Best B&B. Sitting on the western fringes of the city center is B&B Hotel Milano Sant’Ambrogio, one of the best hotels in Milan, Italy. Don’t be put off by the unassuming and nondescript exterior, as we were nothing less than delighted when we entered. We had the choice of many spacious and well-sized rooms and suites. The best bit was that they all featured private bathrooms with luxurious touches, which is why we give this place full marks. Moreover, they all featured gorgeous murals on the walls above the beds, as well as comfy beds and well-sized windows. At the end of the day, returning to our room was quite a welcome respite at the end of a long day of sightseeing.

Despite being one of Milan’s best budget hotels, the amenities here were delightful. We especially loved hanging out on the huge terrace that boasted absolutely stunning views across the church. The alfresco furniture was very comfy to unwind on with a glass of wine and some music or a good book. Furthermore, the location was central and yet tranquil, with the Sant’Ambrogio metro stop close by.

Hotel Manzoni

Best boutique hotel. We were looking for a boutique hotel in Centro Storico, which is when we came across Hotel Manzoni. This 1951-built luxury boutique hotel sat right in the heart of Quadrilatero d’Oro in a 19th-century townhouse. The entire hotel had Murano glass chandeliers, period Milan photos, and Manzoni masterpieces — we were impressed right off the bat. We had the choice of 47 rooms across 4 floors, including lavishly decked out single rooms and suites. Aside from the fact that they were stylish and comfy, they all boasted plush beds with monogrammed headboards and spacious marble bathrooms. In fact, the two largest rooftop suites even had terraces looking out over the city.

When the weather is nice, which is when we visited, we could unwind in the courtyard surrounded by lush greenery. During cooler evenings, the sofas of the Caminetto Bar, right next to the fireplace and grand piano, were ideal. The hotel took R&R a step further with a hammam, a hot tub, and a small basement fitness center. We loved the onsite restaurant Don Rodrigo so much that we even decided to enjoy the paid breakfast the day we were lounging around at the hotel.

Since it sits in a historical building, all rooms and suites were different. However, all rooms are decked out individually in a modern style with minibars, air conditioning, and private luxurious bathrooms.

No trip is complete without a bit of unwinding. For the same, the Roof Milano Bar & Restaurant was where we’d be, especially for quick bites and evening drinks. The terrace views were simply gorgeous, overlooking the city skyline and the Basilica of Sant’Alessandro, all the way to the Italian Alps. Free Wi-Fi throughout the property rounded up the amenities.

Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand Spa

Best luxury. French chic meets Italian flair at the Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand Spa Milano, one of the best luxury hotels in Milan Italy. It sits on Corso di Porta Nuova, a 15-minute walk north of the Duomo. We had a bevy of choices for rooms and suites spread across 10 levels, all of which were decked out in modern Milanese and romantic Parisian style. The best bit? They all had luxe marble bathrooms with huge soaking bathtubs and small balconies from where we could see views of Centro Storico.

We were charmed by the amenities here, especially the savvy group of concierges who took care of us like we were modern-day royalty. When we were hungry, the two dining venues, an informal lounge and a restaurant, were ideal. We even enjoyed alfresco meals and cocktails in the exclusive 18th-century private garden that was a rare oasis of greenery in the neighborhood. Our favorite, though, was the modern Bedouin Palace-like 15,000-sq-ft Grand Spa.

STRAF Milan, A Member of Design Hotels

Closest to Duomo. Sitting at the top of the list is STRAF Milan, A Member of Design Hotels, one of the best hotels in Milan Italy near Duomo. It sat in the street right behind the Duomo, and we could hop, skip, and jump across to the Piazza whenever we wanted. Moreover, most of the top things to do in Milan were all around us.

Straf boasted a stylish vibe, complete with bold furnishings and artwork. The digs might have been on the cozier side, but were decked out with comfy, cloud-like beds and custom Vincenzo De Cotiis furnishings. Did we mention the oversized windows with superb views? Ours had views of the cathedral, so what more could we ask for? Do you want to indulge in something different? The “Well-being” and “Relax” rooms had aromatherapy and chromotherapy treatments, as well as massage armchairs.

This is one of those rare boutique hotels that boasted a plethora of full-service amenities, like the spa with a resistance pool, a hammam, a sauna, and a lounge area. Its most notable amenity is its pet-friendliness, with pets staying for free and being given doggy bowls, treats, body and paw wipes. Finally, a bar and restaurant out front round up the amenities.

We begin with the area around the Duomo Cathedral, which sits at the heart of Centro Storico.
