Stroll the old cobblestone streets
1
Werben kept its old city structure from the middle ages: Tiny half-timbered houses and a huge church, but no souvenir shops. Founded 1000 years ago, it soon became the first home of the Order of St. John in northern Europe. Discover the Salzkirche („salt church“), St. Johns church and dozens of half-timbered houses that have been renovated with a lot of love and understanding for arts and crafts. Go knock at the beautiful House of the Commander that was menaced by demolition ten years ago – and recently won the award for one of the best reconstruction projects in Germany. Werben has many stories like this one to tell – an architectural phenix rising from the ashes.
Discover the Biedermeier markets
2
Twice a year, on the first weekend of July and the third weekend of advent in December, Werben falls back in the biedermeier period. People are dressed in historical costumes like 200 years ago, a stagecoach with four horses arrives, locally brewn beer is served and at night there is only candles, no electric light at all. A truly magic experience – and a great place, to make friends (it helps if you speak at least a little german, but there also a lot of people with experience abroad – so you will find English speakers).
Do a canoe tour on river Elbe
3
Discover the little city and its surroundings from the water. You may rent a canoe on site and then do a tour by yourself. You can watch birds of all kind and watch huge barges pass by. And to relax afterwards, the canoe rental guy, Tobias, will prepare a picnic on the Elbe beach for you – with local charcuterie, bread, fruit, cold beer and sparkling fruit wines – and with a white tablecloth and real glasses. Fine dining, Werben style!
Count the storks
4
You probably didn’t know but Werben is the hotspot for storks in Germany. According to an expert, it is the town that has more stork couples breeding here than any other one in Germany. In 2015 not less than 18 couples came to raise their littles here. You can see their nests everywhere in Werben, but even better: you can hear them clatter – and when you step up to the tower of the Elbetor, you can even take a look to see their littles waiting for yummy frogs.
Take the Reaction ferry over River Elbe
5
This is the most ecologic principle of traveling: The ferry over river Elbe is only operated by the courant – but manages to transport huge lorries! This cable ferry system was invented in 1657 and is still the day-to-day basis to travel over the river – as there is no bridge or tunnel nearby. So do like the locals do and closely watch the operating times: If you miss the last ferry at night, you will have a 2 hour drive to get to the other side of the river again.
And if you find the house with the blue door, you can meet ‘Wulf Gäng’ also known as ‘lupus werbensis’.
Yes the smallest hanseatic City is the geatest in good vibrations; come herre and find out ! The (not really angry) wulf !
