Playa Azul Cozumel
11
Cozumel has countless beach resorts, but Playa Azul stands out easily. First of all, let’s talk about our sweet suite. We booked the Queen Suite, and it is extremely spacious. We had a living area and a private jacuzzi on the balcony. When we arrived, we were even welcomed with fresh flowers and towel animals.
Being a beachfront hotel, there are plenty of lounge chairs and palm umbrellas outside, a tiki bar that serves drinks and food directly to your chair, and two swimming pools. The attached beach club next door adds even more. We were surprised when we found an outdoor bar, an open-air venue with live bands, and a volleyball net. We also rented snorkel gear on the beach and signed up for a diving excursion.
The on-site restaurant was another highlight. Every morning, there’s a free hot breakfast buffet from 7 AM to 10 AM, complete with an omelet station. Additionally, it also serves lunch and dinner. We had the best fajitas of our trip there, and the Mayan lime soup was out of this world. Prices are very reasonable, too. While there are a couple of restaurants across the street, the on-site one was good enough that we never needed to venture far.

Iberostar Waves Cozumel
10
Up next is Iberostar Waves Cozumel. This resort is large but very walkable, and everywhere you go, it feels green and jungly. For us, though, the real highlight was the animals. Yes! We’re talking parrots, flamingos, a hawk, a peacock and his peahens, iguanas, and even some resident cats. If you’re an animal lover, you’ll definitely have a blast.
We came here to dive, but we were also impressed by the all-inclusive amenities. There’s bingo, pool games, 80s-themed nights, and much more. We had so much fun, and even families with kids were having a good time. We wouldn’t recommend it for a romantic getaway, but as a fun base for an adventure trip, it works great.
Food-wise, we were thrilled. The breakfast buffet was excellent, and dinner options had a solid variety with healthy choices available. The lobby bar made us some amazing cocktails beyond the usual frozen drink fare. Wine, beer, and prosecco are included with meals, with an add-on wine menu if you want to upgrade.

Occidental Cozumel
9
Want to escape Cozumel’s crowds? Then the Occidental Cozumel is well worth considering. Like many other luxury hotels in Cozumel Mexico, it’s conveniently located just a short walk along the beach from the busier spots. This resort made a great first impression with its charming hacienda-style architecture. With only 25 rooms, all of them are generously sized. Based on what we saw during our trip, we think it’s a particularly good pick for families traveling with older children.
Furthermore, a PADI-certified dive center is available on the beach. Along with a private dock, boat departures are completely hassle-free. One of the biggest draws is the direct access to nearby reefs. We were able to join a guided dive without any unnecessary detours. Thrill-seekers should also keep an eye out for the seasonal shark excursion!
After a full day underwater, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is food. Thankfully, the Occidental delivers. You’ll have access to two main buffets alongside three specialty restaurants. For nights when we were simply too wiped out to move, we used the room service. Traveling with kids? You can drop them off at the supervised Kids’ Club.

Dreams Cozumel Cape Resort & Spa
8
Initially, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but Dreams Cozumel Cape Resort & Spa made us smile so big. The resort is on a gorgeous beach and offers 154 suites with views of either the ocean or the surrounding tropical landscape. We went with a swim-out pool suite, and though it was on the pricier side of things, we were glad we made that move. Plus, the all-inclusive package covers everything from gourmet meals and top-shelf drinks to 24-hour room service and poolside waitstaff, so we just needed to show up and do nothing.
The dining options at this resort are equally impressive. There are nine restaurants and bars in total. Adult guests also get access to the neighboring Secrets Aura Cozumel, free of charge. For those considering the Preferred Club upgrade, go for it. You get a dedicated lounge, premium suite locations, personalized check-in, afternoon snacks, and complimentary access to the hydrotherapy circuit at the spa.
Aside from the beach and pool, there’s a lot going on. Think scuba diving lessons, aqua aerobics, beach volleyball, cocktail-making classes, themed nights, and big-screen movies. Families are especially spoiled here, with a dedicated kids’ club for ages 3–12 and a teens’ club for ages 13–17 available daily.

The Landmark Resort Of Cozumel
7
Best for Long Stays. Looking for the perfect home in Cozumel? We might’ve found it for you! Introducing The Landmark Resort Of Cozumel. Here, you’ll find high-end condos and villas. We stayed in a two-bedroom condo on the sixth floor, each room with its own en-suite. We had everything we needed: a lovely balcony, a full kitchen, in-unit laundry, a half bath, and some of the most comfortable beds we’ve slept in while traveling.
This resort is tucked into an exclusive oceanfront enclave on the southern end of Cozumel, sitting right along the Caribbean shoreline overlooking Dzul Ha Reef. The grounds are gorgeous, the architecture is elegant, but what we loved the most was that it gave us the privacy of a residence. It even boasts a crystal-clear pool.
We would confidently put The Landmark above most resorts we’ve visited in Cozumel and the surrounding area. The location is hard to beat, the condos are spacious and luxurious, and the overall experience was more special than your typical resort stay, especially if you’re planning to stay for a while.

Fiesta Americana Cozumel
6
If you’re looking for a place where the whole group can switch off, Fiesta Americana Cozumel is a great choice. The beach club alone is worth the stay. It boasts Bali beds, over-the-water loungers, hammocks, and a newly renovated dip pool. We had a really relaxing time there because of the setting and beach club.
The dining is another strong point. With seven restaurants on-site, we always had the perfect place for what we wanted that day. La Cevichería was our go-to for lunch. Fresh seafood, open air, no complaints. Rosato handled our Italian cravings, and Península threw us off in the best way with its creative Asian menu. When we weren’t eating, we were either snorkeling the nearby coral reefs or catching a sunset from the over-water beds. Of course, we also made sure to sneak off to the Na’Ha Spa for some rejuvenation.
Rooms here are modern, comfortable, and come with private terraces as standard. Since we wanted something more luxurious, we booked one of the suites and had our own private jacuzzi. What’s more, the resort is also well-positioned for day trips. Chankanaab Park and Punta Sur are close by if you want to venture out. However, with everything on offer here, leaving is pretty much optional.

The Explorean Cozumel
5
Best On-Site Amenities. The Explorean Cozumel lives up to its name in every sense of the word. Our days were packed with snorkeling, kayaking, horseback riding, and tearing around in a dune buggy. Every single day felt like an adventure, and we always woke up excited about the activities we had planned for that day.
You don’t have to leave the hotel to have fun, though. The outdoor pool, though, on the smaller side, is charming and well-kept. It’s the perfect spot for winding down on a mild afternoon. Dining at Lool Kan was amazing, too. And if you think you need more options, you can visit the neighboring Fiesta Americana. Yep, The Explorean is Fiesta’s sister property, so you can use the restaurants, pools, and other amenities there.
Once we were done with our activities, there was no better place to relax than our Casita King Room. It was airy, bright, and well-equipped. The bathroom stood out in particular. It has marble finishes, warm wood detailing, and a rainfall shower. After a good night’s sleep, we would always wake up to fresh bread, coffee, and juice delivered straight to our door. Lovely, right?
By the way, did you know that The Explorean is also named one of the best boutique hotels in Cozumel?

The Westin Cozumel
4
Perched close to the Yucatan Peninsula‘s most celebrated dive sites, The Westin Cozumel is a dream base for anyone who lives for what’s beneath the surface. We logged an impressive amount of time exploring coral walls and swim-throughs just a short distance away. We were left speechless when eagle rays and barracuda made their appearances.
After a full day underwater, the resort did a fantastic job of helping us recharge. We visited the spa once, and the therapists clearly know their craft. We left feeling like new people. Hunger wasn’t a concern either, with two on-site dining options keeping us well-fed. Come evening, the swim-up bar became our unofficial headquarters.
Families will also find plenty to love here. The playground is well-maintained, and it gives younger guests a safe, engaging space to burn off energy. Whether you’re chasing world-class dives or simply want a resort that keeps every member of your group happy, The Westin Cozumel checks every box.

Hotel B Unique
3
Hotel B Unique should be at the top of your list if your priority is to swim. The hotel sits right on the waterfront in the peaceful North Hotel Zone, making it the perfect choice for anyone who wants ocean access. Thanks to its location and easy access to the sea, we always found ourselves taking a dip at all hours, completely on our own schedule. When we weren’t swimming, we were either lounging poolside or just taking in those gorgeous views.
The hotel also keeps guests well-occupied beyond the beach. There are yoga classes by the sea for those who want to stay active, a spa for when you need to relax, and on some evenings, live music that makes the hotel so festive. There’s never a dull moment when you stay at this hotel.
One of the standout features of this property is that every single room overlooks the water. Now, that’s unique! And to be honest, it was an indulgence we weren’t quite used to. We splurged on the Jr. Suite Grand, and we have zero regrets. Yes, it’s on the higher end of the room tiers, but what you get in return is remarkable. The in-suite bathtub was easily our favorite thing in the suite, especially after long days in the sun.

Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa
2
Best for Diving. We’ve been to Cozumel a few times, and we had the most special time when we were at Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa. This resort is tucked along a quiet beach in the South Hotel Zone. Thus, it was extremely serene. That said, it’s arguably the best dive resort in Cozumel. The resort offers guests unlimited shore diving, and our boat diving experience was amazing, too. We were picked up directly from the private dock, and we reached the main Cozumel dive sites in just a few minutes. The instructors were kind, and they gave us so many practical tips.
Aside from diving, the resort has tons of other activities to keep guests busy. We loved spending our time unwinding at Ikal Spa. The treatments there are inspired by Maya traditions. Even the kids’ club incorporates the local culture meaningfully. There’s also a putting green, a tennis club, as well as other exciting excursions like dolphin-watching and archaeological tours.
While the resort has tons of accommodation options, you can’t go wrong no matter what you choose. Whether you choose one of the high-floor rooms or stay closer to the ground near the lush gardens, everything is lavish. We loved having our own outdoor space, where we could enjoy our morning coffee and start the day slowly.

Cozumel Palace
1
Best All-Inclusive. You can’t talk about luxury hotels in Cozumel Mexico, without mentioning Cozumel Palace. One of this 5-star hotel’s biggest perks is easily its location. Set within walking distance of downtown San Miguel, we could step out and check out nearby shops, eateries, and local spots without breaking a sweat or much planning.
Speaking of location, this resort is also just a short distance away from one of the world’s biggest coral reefs, Palancar Reef. Once we learnt about this, diving was immediately on our to-do list. If you’re looking for more active excursions, the resort can help you plan activities like deep-sea fishing, too.
The food here ended up being one of our favorite parts, and it’s not just because we didn’t have to pay extra. There are four on-site restaurants, and all of them were equally fantastic. Breakfast stood out the most, though. There was a lot of variety, and everything was full of flavor. The staff members were also quick and made our mornings easy. Outside of meals, we spent most of our time either relaxing by the pool or pampering our bodies at the spa.
“Everything about Cozumel Palace feels like perfection. Add in the all-inclusive package, and it’s hard to want to splurge elsewhere.”

Where to Stay in Cozumel, Mexico
There are three main areas in Cozumel worth considering when choosing where to stay. Downtown Cozumel is the most walkable and lively of the three. This area is lined with local restaurants and shops, and it boasts an authentic island energy. It’s also home to the Cozumel Museum and is just steps from the main ferry pier connecting the island to Playa del Carmen. While there are no big beaches, you can expect the most authentic experience on the island.
A short ride away, the North Hotel Zone is noticeably quieter. The northern coast, known as Costa Norte, features calmer water that makes for great swimming and snorkeling, with downtown only about 15 to 20 minutes away when you’re ready for a change of pace. It’s the go-to spot if you want relaxed mornings with ocean views, without fully disconnecting from the rest of the island.
Then there’s the South Hotel Zone, which is the classic coastal stretch. The water here is exceptionally clear, beach access is easy, and most hotels are built with divers and snorkelers in mind. This is where you’ll find Palancar Reef, part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, stretching nearly 700 miles. If the ocean is the whole point of your trip, this is where you want to be.
Are there any 5-star hotels in Cozumel?
Definitely! While the island doesn’t have as many ultra-luxury hotels as Riviera Maya or Cabo, it still boasts many amazing 5-star hotels.
Is Cozumel nicer than Cancun?
It depends. Cozumel is quieter, more laid-back, and known for incredible snorkeling and diving. Cancun is busier, more developed, and better for nightlife, big resorts, and variety.
