We finally made it up to this hilltop spot in St Thomas, and the name fits. Hidden Hilltop Treasure is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood above Charlotte Amalie, which was a nice break from the more touristy areas. Getting there can be a bit of a challenge because the roads are steep and winding, but the host, DeShawn, sent us a video and a pin so we could easily find the place. Having a dedicated parking spot right at the unit was a huge plus as well.

The suite was spotless and had plenty of room for the four of us. We even had a kitchen with all the tools we needed. Since the owners live right on-site, the check-in was seamless, and they were super quick to help out whenever we had a question. They even left some snacks and coffee for us.

Location-wise, we were about 10 minutes from downtown and around 15 minutes from Magens Bay. Exploring the island was never a hassle for us. The best part, though, was the private patio. It was a great place to hang out at night and look at the city lights once we were back from exploring.

The TipSea Turtle

Another amazing option is The TipSea Turtle, sitting right on Bluebeard Beach. We were literally steps away from the water the entire time. One of our favorite parts was just hanging out on the balcony with a drink, watching the boats go in and out of Red Hook. It was like we had our own private beach.

We’re big fans of an easy check-in, so the keypad entry was a huge plus, and the staff was great about staying in touch to make sure we had everything we needed. They even sent over a digital guidebook that came in handy for finding local spots.

As for getting around, we were only about a seven-minute drive from all the bars and restaurants in Red Hook, so we could grab dinner without breaking a sweat. We also liked being within walking distance of the Ritz if we wanted a change of scenery. Highly recommended!

The Mary Anne Boutique Hotel USVI

If you’re looking for a hotel with a view, The Mary Anne is a fantastic pick. The hotel is built right into the hillside, so you can expect amazing views. Since it’s tucked into the slope, there are stairs everywhere, from the entrance and lobby to the kitchen and pool. We actually enjoyed the vertical layout, as it makes the whole property feel private and hidden.

Our King Suite, though, was a highlight for us. It was super clean, comfortable, and designed with travelers in mind. It’s the little things that made the difference, like having both USB-A and C ports right in the nightstand lamps, so we didn’t have to hunt for outlets. We also had all the essentials, including a coffee maker, a safe, and even fresh pool towels, soap, and shampoo.

One of the best perks is the shared kitchen and laundry area. Having access to a full fridge and a washer/dryer made our stay so much easier. But the real “star of the show” is the outdoor area at the top of the hill. The pool and sun deck have an incredible view overlooking the city and the bay.

Best Historic. If you’re into history, Hotel 1829 is wild! It was originally built by a French sea merchant (who might have been a pirate, depending on who you ask) as a wedding gift for his wife. When we were there, we could clearly see the original coral stone walls and mahogany wood. We even spent some time hanging out in the lobby just to see the 1903 Tiffany stained-glass window and the old-school courtyards. On top of that, people like Muhammad Ali stayed here back in the day.

The rooms are boutique-style, so they’re a bit more unique than your standard chain hotel. Our room had air-conditioning, a comfortable bed, a drawer, and a private balcony. Though it was cozy, we made sure not to spend the entire day there! One of our favorite spots was the hillside pool. It’s adults-only, so it stayed quiet, and the view looking over the harbor is easily the best seat in the house.

For food and drinks, we hit up the on-site restaurant, Lavalette’s. It brought back some of the classic dishes the hotel was known for years ago, like the Grand Marnier soufflé, which was actually worth the hype. The bar is one of the oldest in St Thomas, so we grabbed some rum cocktails there before walking down to the waterfront shops.

Sapphire Dream

You don’t have to empty your bank account to stay at a strategically placed hotel in St Thomas, and Sapphire Dream is the perfect example. The location is tough to beat since we were just a short drive from the Red Hook area, which was super convenient for grabbing dinner or catching the ferry.

The condo itself was fresh and updated. It was spotless when we arrived, and it was great to find it stocked with essentials like beach chairs, umbrellas, and sunscreen, so we didn’t have to go out and buy them. We also appreciated having a modern kitchen and a massive 65-inch TV!

One of the best parts was being within walking distance of Sapphire Beach. We spent a lot of our time there snorkeling, and the reef was impressive. We saw plenty of fish and even some turtles. When we wanted a break from the salt, we just hung out by the two pools on the property. There’s also a bar and restaurant right on-site.

Olga’s Fancy

Best for Quick Layovers. Staying at Olga’s Fancy was such a breath of fresh air compared to the big resorts on the island. It was the simple perks that made our stay. The hotel offers free coffee ready every morning and fresh water available all day, which are two things we absolutely need to function.

The location is also great if you hate being stuck in a car. If you’re looking for affordable hotels in St Thomas, Virgin Islands that are right by the airport, this is it. Additionally, if we felt like having a nicer dinner, there was a great restaurant literally right next door. We also spent a good amount of time walking and running along the water right outside. But if you want to stay at the hotel, take a dip in the saltwater pool.

The biggest takeaway for us was the vibe. We spent a day at a big, popular resort for a boat charter, and the crowd was intense. Staying at a simple hotel like Olga’s Fancy that offers solitude was so much better. While the resorts make you feel like just another tourist, staying here actually made us feel like we were living there as locals.

Bluebeard’s Castle Resort

Bluebeard’s Castle Resort provided us with a fantastic stay. Right from the start, the staff was super accommodating. The doorman and the front desk staff went out of their way to help us with whatever we needed. We even scored a complimentary room upgrade when we checked in, which was a huge win because the views from our balcony were amazing. The air-conditioning worked flawlessly, and it was nice having a working stove, fridge, and flat-screen TV in the room.

We spent a lot of time at the pool, too. And if that’s not enough for you, there’s a small jacuzzi waiting for you. Most of our meals happened at the Castle Grill, where the bartenders were awesome, and the drinks were amazing. We highly recommend grabbing breakfast there, as it was delicious and really well-priced.

Furthermore, the location is convenient for getting downtown, but a word of advice: do not try to walk it. The hills are incredibly steep, so we think it’s better to just grab a taxi. They’re always available, and the resort is only about 15 minutes from the airport. So convenient, right?

Galleon House Hotel

If you want to be right in the heart of Charlotte Amalie without spending a fortune, Galleon House Hotel is the place to be. The location is great for walking to the downtown shops and the famous 99 Steps, but you definitely need to be ready for some climbing. That said, the trade-off is the view from the veranda, which looks right out over the harbor and the cruise ships.

The rooms are pretty basic and have an older feel, but they’re clean, and ours did the job for us. We spent most of our time out exploring anyway, so we just needed a clean and comfy room. On top of that, we were also provided with a complimentary breakfast with things like bagels, fruit, and coffee.

After walking around in the heat all day, having the little courtyard pool to jump into was all we needed. It’s a quiet, chill area that feels tucked away from the busier parts of town. This isn’t a high-end luxury resort, so don’t expect fancy robes or 24/7 room service, but it has a lot of local character that you just don’t get at the big chains.

Bunker Hill Hotel

We stayed at the Bunker Hill Hotel mainly for the location, and it didn’t disappoint. This hotel sits right in the middle of historic Charlotte Amalie, which made it super easy for us to walk to spots like the 99 Steps and Blackbeard’s Castle. Being just a five-minute walk from the main duty-free shopping area was a huge plus, too.

Since it’s tucked into the hillside, the views of the harbor are gorgeous, though you should definitely be prepared to climb some stairs to get around the property. Besides that, we spent many hours hanging out by the small outdoor pool and the lounge bar. It’s not a massive luxury resort, but it’s clean and well-equipped.

We were also surprised by the food. We had free breakfasts, which saved us money and hassle in the mornings. For dinner, we just headed over to the Sugarcane Grille right on-site. The Caribbean dishes were great, and the portions were big enough that we never left hungry.

The Mafolie Hotel

Best View. The first thing we noticed when we arrived at The Mafolie Hotel was the height. It’s sitting about 880 feet above sea level, so the view of the harbor is basically the main event here. It’s a family-owned, boutique hotel that’s been around since the 50s, which gives it a much more laid-back, local character than the massive resorts down by the water.

The rooms here are simple but comfortable, and we were happy to find they didn’t skimp on the basics. Our bed had a 10-inch memory foam mattress that was surprisingly good for a hotel, and the air-conditioning kept the room cold, which is a must in the Caribbean heat. We also had a mini-fridge for our drinks and a balcony where we could actually sit and watch the ships come in.

For food and drinks, we spent most of our time at Sol at Mafolie, the on-site restaurant. Better yet, we could enjoy a free breakfast every morning. The bar area is probably the coolest part of the property, though. It’s a great place to grab a drink and see the entire town laid out below you. And if your relaxation doesn’t involve that, simply take a dip in the pool.

Elysian Beach Resort

Best Resort. Everything about Elysian Beach Resort, one of the most affordable hotels in St Thomas, Virgin Islands, is just beautiful and amazing. The beach is big, clean, and sits right in a bay, so the water stays calm and shallow enough to just hang out in. We never had to fight for a spot since there were plenty of chairs. There’s a good mix of sun and shade, and we even spent some time snorkeling off to the left side of the bay.

Check-in and check-out were seamless, and since we rented a car, we were glad there was plenty of parking. We tried both restaurants on-site, too. The pizza was decent for a quick night in, but we especially enjoyed the drinks at the fancy restaurant and the beach bar. The staff was all super helpful and attentive as well.

The location is perfect if you want to be on the East End near Red Hook, but tucked away in a quieter area. It’s super close to the ferry and tons of food options, plus other great spots like Sapphire, Lindquist, and Coki are just a short drive away. But if you’re too tired to venture out, you can always take advantage of the kitchen in your room.
