With so many beachfront hotels in Rio de Janeiro, we thought choosing the right hotel was easy, until we realized how much the right (or wrong) location can affect an entire trip. Rio has over 90 km (65 miles) of coastline, yet not every ocean-view property actually sits on the sand. We found that staying in the right neighborhood, whether Copacabana, Ipanema, or Leblon, can save us time, improve walkability, and make beach days much more enjoyable. That’s why we put together this guide to our favorite beachfront hotels in Rio, focusing on places that truly offer direct beach access, strong reviews, and good value for their category. Take a look!

Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort
11
We start this list with the Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort, a highly rated property on Leblon Beach. Needless to say, the beach out front is a huge draw, but we were in awe of the location. Leblon is hands-down one of Rio’s best neighbourhoods for food, and being able to stroll about 15 minutes to some of the city’s top restaurants felt like a luxury in itself.
Our arrival was hassle-free, which isn’t something we say lightly. The hotel has a separate entrance for bigger groups, and the whole process was calmer and smoother because of it. Once inside, plenty is going on beyond the pool. There are two hard tennis courts tucked behind it for anyone feeling energetic, and upstairs, you can find a jaw-dropping golden spa.
Choosing a room took us a minute because there’s a lot of variety, but views are everything here. The sweeping coastal outlook toward Ipanema is stunning. Moreover, even the entry-level rooms are plush, with thick carpets and dark wood touches that give them an upscale vibe. Families are well looked after, too, as there’s a specially designed room on each floor with a mini-kitchen and living space.

Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro
10
Up next is the Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro, which is located in Barra da Tijuca, wedged between the ocean, lagoon, and mountains. Reserva Beach is literally across the street, allowing us to have breezy sunset strolls every day. The neighborhood surprised us, too. There are some excellent restaurants nearby, plus shopping that ranges from quick-and-easy to full-on retail therapy.
Downstairs, the spa is a total escape hatch. It’s tucked away in the basement, blissfully shielded from the upbeat chaos of samba classes next door and the serious business happening in the ultra-modern gym. When we headed to the beach, the staff had us covered. We were provided with umbrellas, towels, and water. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can also book lessons for pretty much any beach sport you can think of, from surfing to beach volleyball.
Food-wise, the hotel exceeded our expectations, too. The three restaurants span Italian, Brazilian, and pan-Asian, and all of them hit their stride, but Shisu was the standout for us. We loved pairing the sushi and Japanese grill with sake. The bar deserves its own shoutout: lively and soulful with live bossa nova on weekend nights, then completely reinvented in the mornings as a relaxed juice bar and bakery.

PortoBay Rio de Janeiro

Staying at PortoBay Rio de Janeiro dropped us straight in Copacabana, with the beach just across the road and some of our favorite Rio eats within easy walking distance. We loved ducking into classic spots like Pavão Azul, splurging on standout meals at Azumi or Amir, and checking out the newer cafés nearby. With the metro two blocks away, getting to Centro was simple.
The service at PortoBay was top-notch, too. Everyone we met, from the front desk to the rooftop pool bar, was friendly and knowledgeable. The rooftop pool is on the smaller side but lovely for a dip with a view. We also appreciated the ocean-facing gym, the saunas and massage room, plus thoughtful extras like free Havaianas and access to the pool and a full bathroom after check-out.
Now, let’s talk about the views. From most rooms, you get sweeping sights of the coastline stretching from Sugarloaf (one of the most beautiful places in Brazil) to Corcovado and the Dois Irmãos. You should definitely request a higher floor. Lucky for us, our room came with a balcony for slow breakfasts in the sun. The rooms without balconies are impressive as well, though, thanks to dramatic corner windows with wide, wraparound views.

Ipanema Beach House
8
Best Budget. Are you here looking for budget-friendly beachfront hotels in Rio De Janeiro? Take a look at Ipanema Beach House! It’s just a short stroll from the sand and basically around the corner from the Nossa Senhora da Paz metro stop. Being so close to the beach was so exciting for us. We had sunrise walks and sunset swims without having to walk far.
Additionally, we also loved our room. With wooden floors, solid wood bunks, and colorful shutters, the place feels warmer than your average hostel. There are a handful of private rooms if you want your own space, but most of the setup is dorm-style, with rooms capped at nine people and bunks stacked three high. It never felt stuffy, though. Air conditioning is standard, and during the hotter months, they even add extra fans.
You can start your day here with a complimentary breakfast. Though simple, it was satisfying for us. We had breads, pastries, and fruit. Reception doubles as a mini snack stop, with cold beers, soft drinks, and even ice cream for sale. We also loved having access to a couple of spacious kitchens and a BBQ area, especially since supermarkets and corner shops are just steps away. Add in the nearby weekly markets with their colorful, affordable produce, and it’s easy to eat well without spending a fortune.

Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro
7
While Yoo2 Rio de Janeiro isn’t in the heart of the city, that’s where it actually shines. It sits on the edge of Botafogo, right by Guanabara Bay. We could walk to local cinemas and bars in about 15 minutes, hop in a quick cab to Copacabana or Leme for the beach, or head the other way just as easily to Centro’s museums and galleries.
The rooftop is where Yoo2 amazed us the most. The pool is slim but long enough for a proper swim, and the vibe up there is all about lingering. There are loungers everywhere and four massive daybeds you’ll want to claim early. If you’re feeling active, the hotel organizes guided runs and bike rides along the waterfront, which is great if you want to explore without fully committing to solo navigation in a new city.
Our suite was smartly designed and surprisingly spacious, with room for extra seating. The view from the window was easily one of the best we’ve had from a hotel bedroom in Rio, especially from a higher floor where traffic noise drops off. Pro tip: ask for a forward-facing room on a high floor. Those ending in 8 through 12 have the most direct panorama. And yes, the complimentary Globo biscuits were a small but very appreciated nod to a beloved local snack!

Emiliano Rio
6
Best Pool. We checked into Emiliano Rio with one goal and one goal only, and that’s to soak up as much classic Rio scenery as possible. Sitting at the quieter southern end of Copacabana, right by the old military fort, it gave us that gorgeous view without the chaos. From the beach below, we could trace the curve of the shoreline all the way to Sugarloaf, and when we were in the mood to explore, Arpoador’s tucked-away beach was an easy 10-minute stroll.
Our Ocean Emiliano Suite was refreshingly spacious, even by city-hotel standards, and we appreciated the little details like the personalized flip-flops. We also had dramatic windows with fantastic views, luxe bedding, and a soaking tub. However, even the morecompact rooms don’t skimp on comfort.
If you decide to stay here, you’ll agree that it’s easy to settle in and stay put. There’s attentive beach service, a spa for post-sun recovery, and a butler on call. However, we kept gravitating back to the rooftop. The pool’s shallow wet deck is perfect for lounging, the ocean views stretch endlessly, and Emilie Bar keeps the snacks and cocktails coming. Downstairs, Emilie Restaurant also wowed us with creative Brazilian flavors.
“Emiliano’s presence really changes the hotel scene in Copacabana with its modern flair.”

JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro
5
Best Luxury. When it comes to luxury, it’s hard to beat the JW Marriott Rio de Janeiro. This hotel is right in the sweet spot of Copacabana’s famous curve, with Sugarloaf rising to the east, Ipanema and Leblon stretching out to the west, and the Atlantic straight ahead. The beach completely stole the show, but it was nice knowing that real life was close by, too. Just a couple of streets back, Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana buzzes with bakeries, juice bars, supermarkets, and restaurants.
What really made the stay shine, though, was how smoothly the hotel runs. The staff were warm and clearly enjoying themselves, especially at reception, where the straw hats and striped shirts gave everything a playful, old-school Rio vibe. Up on the roof, we found more than just the expected pool: there’s a spa, a gym, and even a food truck!
The rooms themselves are solid and comfortable, clearly designed with consistency in mind. All are a good size andcome with proper marble bathrooms. There are plenty of room options, including Junior Suites and a Presidential Suite. However, if you book an Oceanfront Room, the view alone might convince you to cancel your plans and just stay in.

Hotel Arpoador
4
Hotel Arpoador is one of those hotels that just gets Rio effortlessly. It’s right on the beachfront, literally steps from the Ipanema boardwalk, which allowed us to have morning walks by the ocean and effortless access to some of the neighborhood’s best bars and restaurants. Being Rio’s original beachfront hotel gives it a certain credibility, but it never feels dated.
Inside, the vibe is calm and coastal. Light wood details, tons of white, and soft blue accents make the rooms feel like an extension of the beach outside. We loved waking up in those cloud-like white beds, pulling back the sheer curtains, and seeing the ocean framed right there in the window.
Most of our time, though, was spent upstairs. The rooftop pool is a real highlight, complete with a sauna, a small gym, and regular yoga classes. When we wanted to explore, there were the complimentary bikes, and beach days were easy with the hotel’s own chairs set up on the sand. Drinks at the terrace bar flowed easily, and Arp Bar downstairs surprised us with seriously good seafood-forward dishes.
Psst! Did you know that Arpoador is also one of the top gay-friendly hotels in Rio de Janeiro? Yes!

Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro
3
Hotel Fasano Rio de Janeiro knowing has a bit of a reputation, and it lives up to it. This is one of those places where you’re constantly torn between staring out at the beach and Sugarloaf or people-watching by the rooftop pool. The location is unbeatable, tucked right between Arpoador and Ipanema, so wherever we turned, there was golden sand and ocean views.
Our Superior Double Room was ridiculously cozy, and even the smallest spaces feel super comfortable. We have friends who stayed in the ocean-facing suites, and they had serious room envy, like balconies, separate living areas, and even a private bar. Our bed was comfortable, wrapped in crisp Egyptian cotton that made it hard to get up in the mornings, and the marble bathrooms were oozing luxury. Little details stood out too, like Starck’s signature mirrors and those iconic Ipanema flip flops.
Days here can be as relaxed or as adventurous as you want. We split our time between lounging by the rooftop pool, sneaking off for a spa treatment, and taking advantage of the hotel’s experiences. You can have sunrise yoga, join stadium tours, or take advantage of the free surfboards if the waves are calling.

JANEIRO Hotel
2
Best Views. This list won’t be complete without JANEIRO Hotel. It’s perfectly located right across Leblon Beach, staring straight out at the Atlantic. It’s also super easy to get around. With just a short walk, we found ourselves at the Antero de Quental metro, so whether we were heading out to explore Rio or just crossing the street to the beach, it was all seamless.
Rooms at JANEIRO come in a range of sizes, from the cozy entry-level rooms for two to the seriously impressive Master Suites. We spent most of our time gawking at the view. On a clear day, you can actually see Christ the Redeemer from your own lounge. By booking the Master Suite, you’ll have enough space for in-room yoga and be able to soak in the sculptural freestanding tub. Not to mention, every room comes with thoughtful extras, too, like daily breakfast at Janeiro Restaurant, beachside functional training sessions, and discreet butler service.
When we weren’t in our suite, we would slip into our complimentary Havaianas and be on the sand, where private drink service magically appeared, then borrow bikes to cruise around the neighborhood. After a massage at the Mini Spa, we parked ourselves at the pool bar with cold drinks and zero responsibilities. Dinner at Cedilha wrapped things up perfectly, with classic Brazilian flavors done right.

Copacabana Palace
1
Best Amenities. Copacabana Palace feels about as prime as it gets in Rio. We loved stepping out the front door and seeing Copacabana Beach right across the avenue. When we wanted to switch it up, Ipanema was an easy 10-minute stroll away, and the quieter stretch of Leme was about 15 minutes on foot. It allowed us to explore Rio’s beaches with a coconut in hand so easily.
As one of the best hotels in Rio de Janeiro, it’s pure old-school glamour. Opened back in 1923, this place has serious history, and it wears it proudly. From the grand white façade to the lavish interiors full of marble, dark wood, and chandeliers everywhere you look, it’s unapologetically over the top, but in the best way. We stayed in one of the beautifully classic rooms, with a huge, comfy bed and French doors we flung open for views over the ocean and the pool. Psst! Iconic legends like Marlene Dietrich and Princess Diana once stayed here!
What really sets Copacabana Palace apart, though, is how much there is to do. There’s a stunning pool, spa, gym, even a rooftop tennis court, plus attentive beach service that makes lazy seaside days dangerously easy. The concierge can arrange everything from bay cruises to paddleboarding through mangroves or private city tours. And then there’s the food, which is on a whole different level. Between the Michelin-starred Mee by Ken Hom, the iconic Italian Ristorante Hotel Cipriani, and more laid-back spots like the pool bar and an intimate omakase experience, we never ran out of reasons to stay in and eat our way through the hotel.

Where to Stay in Rio De Janeiro
For travelers who want to stay right on the sand, Rio de Janeiro comes down to three beachfront neighborhoods: Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon. Each offers a different experience, but all three put you steps from the ocean and close to the parts of the city most visitors spend their time in.
Copacabana is the most well-known and the easiest place to find true beachfront hotels. We often recommend it for first-time visitors because it’s energetic, affordable by Rio standards, and extremely convenient. The long beachfront promenade is lined with hotels, restaurants, and shops, and multiple metro stations make it easy for us to get around the city without relying on taxis. It’s busy and touristy, but that also means plenty of choice and solid infrastructure.
Just next door, Ipanema feels more refined and walkable. The beach is generally cleaner and less chaotic, and the neighborhood has a strong mix of dining, shopping, and nightlife. We like Ipanema when we want a beachfront stay that balances convenience with a more upscale atmosphere. Hotels here tend to be fewer and more expensive, but the location and overall experience often make up for it.
At the quieter end of the spectrum is Leblon, which borders Ipanema and offers a more residential, high-end feel. We usually suggest Leblon for travelers who want beachfront access without heavy crowds, especially couples and families. While hotel options are limited, the area is known for being one of the safest in Rio, with excellent restaurants and an easygoing beach scene that still keeps us close to everything.
What is the nicest beach in Rio de Janeiro?
Copacabana is often considered the nicest and most iconic beach in Rio de Janeiro, thanks to its long stretch of sand, lively atmosphere, and famous oceanfront promenade.
Is Copacabana safer than Ipanema?
Yes, Copacabana is generally considered safer than Ipanema, especially for travelers staying near the beachfront and main avenues. It has a heavier police presence and more constant activity, which tends to reduce petty crime.
Can you swim in Copacabana Beach?
Yes, you can swim at Copacabana Beach, and many locals and visitors do so year-round. The water is generally safe, though conditions can vary with waves and currents, so we always pay attention to posted flags and lifeguards.
