Castel Monastero
11
We begin with Castel Monastero, which is tucked within a colossal 11th-century fortress-like monastery. The huge, dramatic wooden doors instantly made an impression on us. The rich history of this monastery fortress can be seen in the 76 rooms and suites, many of which lie clustered around the main piazza. We loved the details in the rooms, like terracotta floors, original beams on the ceilings, and spectacular views out of the windows. Moreover, the moodily muted decor, subtle details, and a slew of luxurious mod-cons made it one of the most romantic escapes we’ve ever been to.
Coming to the amenities, we especially loved the special saltwater pool, Aquae Monasterii, which was perfect for swimming in and lounging by with views. In the evening, the main square was delightfully buzzing with activity, complete with an aperitivo hour. Moreover, the Tuscan creations at the restaurant were delicious, but the real attraction was the enormous spa. In fact, the only choice you have to make here is whether to indulge in their famous detox programme or enjoy the local Chianti!

La Guardia Hotel, Giglio

Most eco-friendly. Can a Tuscan resort also be a Mediterranean escape? We didn’t have to imagine but actually experienced it at the stunning La Guardia Hotel on Giglio Island off the coast of Tuscany, where the Mediterranean met minimalism.
An hour-long ferry ride from the Italian mainland brought us to this sustainable eco hotel, which offers a perfect slice of easy seaside Mediterranean living. We loved the sea-facing restaurant and contemporary bar that are known for delicious food and an extensive wine selection of more than 50 labels. Moreover, the concierge team could arrange for everything, from reservations and tickets to excursions and even evening yoga. And despite not having a swimming pool, the hotel offered direct access to the sea from a small beach — what could be better?
While all its rooms are spectacular, the junior suites open right out onto the beach. Nevertheless, they all boasted wicker lamps, seagrass accents, wooden tables, and superbly luxe bathrooms.

Il Borro Relais & Châteaux, Arezzo

Most serenely luxurious. We were looking for peace and relaxation, and Il Borro Relais & Châteaux offered the perfect blend of both. This gorgeous, lovingly restored medieval châteaux is nestled amidst wooded hills and vineyards. What was even better was that only resort shuttles were allowed, which made it blissfully serene.
One of the most romantic things to do here is walking through the cobblestoned streets, with nothing but the rustle of leaves and birdsong in the air. We would also go wine tasting, attend cooking classes, cycle along the trails, and ride horses through the vineyards. After all, Il Borro is also one of the best winery hotels in Tuscany, Italy! Finally, when we simply wanted to chill, we’d swim in the refreshing outdoor pool and lounge beside it, with cocktails.
While we had a wide range of choices for accommodations, our Prestige Suite was a fantastic choice as it came with a luxe bathroom with a bathtub, Ferragamo bath products, a private pool, and even a terrace!
“Il Borro feels romantic without billing itself outwardly as romantic, which is what makes it so great for discerning couples like us.”

Villa San Michelle Florence
8
Villa San Michelle, Florence sat in a former monastery amidst quiet wooded luxury just 20 minutes from Florence, making it the perfect love nest for us. We felt like ancient Italian royalty at this innately Instagrammable 15th-century former Franciscan monastery, with a rabbit warren of corridors and stairways. What’s more, it was sprinkled with precious Florentine antiques, old master paintings and prints, and vaulted ceilings.
While all rooms here were amazing, the Michelangelo Suite was the ultimate in romance. Not only did it have a huge fireplace, but it also had double French windows opening to lush views. A four-poster mahogany bed, modern amenities, and bedside silver dishes with crunchy green olives and Prosecco. Did we mention a huge bathtub and bespoke bath products? Yes!
What we also loved on the property were the many romantic activities on offer here for couples. Not only were there cocktail-making classes, wine tastings, and sensuous cooking classes, but there were also walks along the lush pathways, a pool terrace with jaw-dropping views and poolside service, poolside full-moon parties, and treatments in a ‘wellness suite.’ We actually got couples’ massages in a massive massage gazebo under the canopy in the gardens with lovely Tuscan countryside views. Moreover, there were also candlelit dinners at the restaurant, complete with live music. Did we mention that the 17th-century chapel on the property makes it one of the country’s most popular wedding retreats?

Palazzo Cini

Is there any way to stay in a romantic stay in the middle of a city? Palazzo Cini surely does, and it’s also one of the best hotels in Pisa, Tuscany. This small but welcoming and stylish hotel occupies a late 19th-century Liberty palazzo sitting in a lush garden. Despite being in the heart of the city, we felt like we were far out somewhere.
Besides the amazing hospitality — fruit juice, biscuits, et al — we loved the antique items and contemporary artwork everywhere. Our favorite place on the property was the wide terrace through the French windows, with steps leading down to a lush garden. As foodies, we loved the breakfast spread, the complimentary refreshments in the lounge, and sweet treats and Tuscan wines on sale in our rooms. That, and the nearby car parks and roadside parking permits ensured that, despite the city center location, parking our rental was a breeze.
We had the choice of just five spacious rooms, so staying here felt exclusive and intimate. What’s more, they all had special features, like a freestanding retro bathtub, a color-therapy two-seater whirlpool tub with Bluetooth speakers, and the like. If that wasn’t enough, they all featured kettles, Nespresso machines, smart TVs with Netflix, white and ecru color schemes, and large windows.

Conti di San Bonifacio — Wine Resort, Grosseto

Best organic luxury. Since we’re fans of organic luxury, we were looking forward to our stay at Conti di San Bonifacio — Wine Resort, and we weren’t disappointed. Sitting amidst verdant hills above its own wine estate, this stunning, five-room Tuscan farmhouse was as sustainable as it was incredibly romantic — with wine, of course. It was the most exquisite place and way to relax and unwind.
There were just seven suites — which adds to the romance and intimacy — decked out in a chic yet romantic manner. Think muslin-draped four-poster beds, marble bathrooms with deep-soaking bathtubs, open fireplaces, and romantic terraces with vineyard views. Besides modern touches that made our stay comfy, they were also sprinkled with vintage leather seats and Asian antiques.
Besides sipping on handcrafted wines at guided tastings or in the comfort of our deep-soaking bathtub in the comfort of our suite, there was a lot to do here. The best feature was, undoubtedly, the infinity pool, which offered some of the most incredible views in Tuscany, with wine, of course. Since we’re foodies, we dug into the fantastic Italian fare at the Maremmana restaurant. And finally, since we were both outdoorsy people, we loved doing everything here: private yoga, ayurvedic couple’s massages, mountain biking, truffle hunting — you name it.

Villa Le Prata, Siena
5
Villa Le Prata was the perfect place for intimate wine tastings and sunset views. Tucked into a stunning 1862-built oasis, this place was a former hunting lodge and official country residence of a count and a bishop before it took the form of this winery hotel.
We were surrounded by vineyards and olive groves at this stunning escape, which is where the iconic Brunello di Montalcino wine is produced. So, we were able to enjoy some romantic wine tasting as well as sip glasses all over the property, whether it was by the pool or on a picnic on the lush grounds. In fact, we even enjoyed alfresco meals under the stars, all paired with the estate’s wine, of course. However, what made it all the more special was that since the vineyard’s area is limited, it makes the wine exclusive.
Even staying here was as romantic as we’d ever seen, with just eight limited-edition rooms and suites featuring luxurious details to choose from. What’s more, they boasted the most romantic furnishings, like the red walls in the bishop’s room. However, we chose the eponymous Le Prata, which had stunning views of the vineyards and the gardens.

Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola, Grosseto
4
Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola is set into the stunning cliffs of Monte Argentario in Maremma on the Tyrrhenian coast. The lush landscape, along with the marine vistas, was almost too much — imagine a rocky promontory connected by three narrow spits of land to the mainland, making it impossibly dramatic. That’s why it’s considered one of the most glamorous luxury retreats in the Mediterranean.
The hotel occupies what’s left of a 17th-century watchtower. The peaceful gardens with the infinity pool overlooking the Mediterranean were our favorite spot on the property, and also the most romantic. After all, Richard Burton and Liz Taylor visited this property more than half a century ago, which means that romance never goes out of style. Meanwhile, the restaurant took maximum advantage of its Tuscan traditions and phenomenal Maremma seafood. When we wanted some alone romantic time, we’d head down to the beach club, which offered not only secluded access to the Cala Piatti cove, but also some excellent diving opportunities. Did we mention that the beach had loungers, parasols, and served drinks? It was the best way to end the day.
We had the choice of 52 cool and elegant rooms and suites, many of which had private balconies with spectacular sea views, including ours. While they all had creature comforts, nothing compared to enjoying the alfresco seating in the balcony with sea views and the deep-soaking bathtubs.

Poggio Piglia, Chiusi
3
One of the best Tuscany hotels with a pool is Poggio Piglia, which is tucked quietly between Assisi and Siena, just beyond the tiny town of Macciano. We loved this hidden gem of a hotel, which sat surrounded by its own peaceful, lush grounds. It was the perfect place for a romantic getaway in Tuscany.
We loved the infinity pool, which was the heart of this hotel and our favorite place to spend time together and relax. What made it all the better was that it was surrounded by herb-scented gardens. After we had swum to our heart’s content, we’d head to the restaurant and bar for some delicious food and wine tasting sessions. In fact, the terrace was a fantastic place to enjoy a glass of wine while soaking in bird’s-eye views of Tuscany.
Since we wanted to splurge and go all out for our second honeymoon, the Independent Villa was perfect. Nestled among olive trees and with lush countryside views, it felt as romantic as private, like our very own slice of heaven on the property. However, even the other rooms exude warm Tuscan character, ensuring that you have something special, whatever digs you choose to land in here.

Fontelunga Hotel & Villas, Arezzo
2
The intimate and fairly remote Tuscan getaway of Fontelunga Hotel & Villas is set in the panoramic and peaceful village of Pozzo della Chiana. Whether it was the complementary glass of wine, the lush gardens, the impressive art collection, or the antiques sprinkled throughout the 19th-century manor, the vibe cannot get more romantic.
The marmalade-colored structure of the hotel shines against the bright blue sky, offering spectacular views across the Val di Chiana. Besides efficient and friendly service, we loved the morning strolls through the olive groves, stargazing on the swing, and morning swims at the stunning pool. What’s more, we could book private cookery courses, dig into delicious food in a sheltered gazebo, and enjoy a glass of wine at the open fire on cool evenings. Plus, the large shared lounge had a flat-screen TV, comfy seating, books, magazines, and games. On-site dinner parties, a pool bar, complimentary bicycles, and breakfasts — this hotel had it all.
The rooms and suites didn’t have TVs, but we didn’t need them, what with stunning valley views and kitchenettes where we’d be whipping up romantic meals. Moreover, they also had bathrooms with Molton Brown bath products, iPod docking stations — the works.

Relais Sant’Elena, Bibbona
1
Best overall. Sitting at the top of the list is Relais Sant’Elena, which sits in the picturesque Bibbona, between the forest and the beach! We weren’t the only honeymooners here; we found tons of other couples enjoying the romantic vibe of the dreamy farmhouse-style boutique hotel, which emulated the Tuscan experience to a tee.
We were swathed in the romantic environment right off the bat, as we entered a secluded tangle of stone walls growing ivy, rose gardens, and wooden beams — the stuff of Italian fairytales. The dining program is top-tier and one for the foodies, like us. Firstly, the property uses fresh ingredients and olive oil from its gardens. We especially loved the theatrical production of a breakfast at the 19th-century farm table every morning. Since we loved cooking together, the bookable cooking classes were absolutely amazing. Daily poolside/garden lunches, drinks throughout the day, and romantic dinners under the stars were the stuff of dreams
All rooms and suites were individually designed with historic details, antiques, and a panoply of prints, fabrics, and colors. Not only do the bathrooms have modern updates, but they also have mod-cons, stocked minibars, and gorgeous views.

They’re also famous for their ancient churches, charming squares, and hidden corners, allowing for a slower Tuscan holiday.
