Casa Baglioni – Milan
11
We begin with Casa Baglioni – Milan, a five-star boutique hotel with attentive and warm hospitality that made us feel like we were in a home away from home. Set on the fringes of the artistic Brera, the hotel is an ode to 1960s Milanese design and art, materials like marble and walnut typical of the period, geometric blue and yellow patterns, and herringbone floors. Every inch is Instagram worthy, whether it’s the artwork or the floors and ceilings.
Facilities might be limited to the rooftop bar, the small café-cum-lounge area, and the compact gym, but they were stunning. The highlight here is the range of experiences on offer, including interesting city tours and even a bespoke hat-making session with the luxury Italian company Borsalino! Discreet and attentive service aside, we loved the exceptional food at the restaurant, including the delectable breakfast spread.
Despite its location, the digs rooms were blissfully quiet and decked out in 1960s-inspired décor. Appealing bathrooms, a warm grey, cream, walnut and blue color palette and sleek desks with in-built USB ports certainly made our stay as comfortable as it got.

Senato Hotel Milano

White, black, and gold dominate the boutique Senato Hotel Milano, with local expertise shining at its very heart. Despite its busy Via Senato location, the hotel is serene and quiet, with all major Milan attractions and sights a mere 10-minute walk away. In fact, the Duomo Cathedral was just a 15-minute walk, making it one of the best hotels in Milan Italy near Duomo.
Formerly the quaint home of the Ranza family, this boutique hotel sits around an inner courtyard, complete with shallow waters flowing over grey stone. As we stepped inside the neoclassical façade, the marble, brass, and greenery made for a heady combination. A compact gym aside, we loved the top floor terrace with sunbeds. An excellent wine list, delicious fare, and a small but carefully curated breakfast spread round up the offerings here. Did we mention that we could enjoy massages and beauty treatments right in our rooms? Yep.
All rooms overlook either the inner courtyard, the small patio, or Via Senato and feature plush beds, pillow menus, oak herringbone floors, and have mod-cons, of course. The large windows allowed us to appreciate the views, while the insulated glazing and blackout curtains allowed us to catch 40 winks.

Hotel Manzoni

Most luxurious. We’re absolute fashion lovers, so we had to look no further than Hotel Manzoni, a luxury boutique hotel right in the heart of the shopping hub of Quadrilatero d’Oro. The 1951-established hotel sits in a 19th-century townhouse. We were impressed right off the bat, given that the entire copy of the Manzoni masterpiece “The Betrothed” hung right next to reception! Even the walls were decked out with scenes from Manzoni’s books and period photographs of the city, with Murano glass chandeliers overhead.
During nice weather, we’d relax in the hotel’s courtyard surrounded by plants. When it got colder, the Caminetto Bar’s sofas right next to the grand piano and marble fireplace brought us solace. A small basement fitness center, a hot tub, and a hammam took the R&R a step further. The Manzoni theme extends to the onsite restaurant Don Rodrigo, which is named for the villain in the novel. On the day we left, we enjoyed a delicious (paid breakfast) at the delightfully old-fashioned place.
Choose from 47 rooms across 4 floors, including suites and even single rooms with French beds. Besides being comfy and stylish, the digs had spacious marble bathrooms, plush beds with monogrammed headboards, and even terraces in the two largest rooftop suites.

Petit Palais

A convent-turned-private residence-turned boutique hotel? Now that sounded most interesting! Behold Petit Palais, which retained the stately home’s ambiance with Murano chandeliers, antique paintings, and period furnishings. We were a 15-minute walk from Duomo in the Ticinese district and were surrounded by delightful cafes and vintage boutiques.
When we arrived, we rung a bell to be let in, furthering the impression of entering a private residence rather than a hotel. Despite there being no amenities, there’s the quintessential Italian touch in the form of a small leafy courtyard. We’d kick back here with a book and retreat to the living sofas next to the fireplace when it got colder. Did we mention the in-room breakfast despite no onsite restaurant? Yes!
With just 18 rooms over 4 floors, staying here felt very intimate. Paintings, period furnishings, silk tapestries, and small but sleek kitchenettes graced all rooms, along with equally chic bathrooms. Check out some of the amazing deals offered by the hotel.

Savona 18 Suites
7
The boutique Savona 18 Suites sits in the lively and hip Zona Tortona, an industrial neighborhood-turned-buzzing design, fashion, and arts district. By the way, everything you see in this 42-room boutique outpost is on sale, whether it’s a trinket or a painting – just look for the little price tag placed by every item.
The structure the hotel sits in is a traditional Milanese “casa a ringhiera” – a residential structure with iron railings on every floor and an open gallery. Lively pops of color are everywhere, including the lounge area that leads to the breakfast room that also doubles as a bar/café. A helpful staff aside, the hotel also serves drinks in the summer in the outdoor patio. If you’re into fitness, there are even two Fitness Deluxe Suites! A simple spread for breakfast – eggs, cheeses, cold cuts, cakes, and pastries – and the Petit Café round up the offerings here.
The spacious rooms feature vintage accouterments and contemporary furnishings, spick and span bathrooms, and even Nespresso machines.

Palazzo Segreti

Best value for money. A 10-minute walk from Duomo brought us to Palazzo Segreti, one of the best budget hotels in Milan. What was also so great about the location was that we were right on the street connecting the Duomo and Castello Sforzesco. So, most of the top things to do and see in Milan were within an easy strolling distance, so we also saved significantly on transportation. When it comes to the amenities, the hotel served a fantastic continental buffet breakfast, which was the best way to begin our days. A small but perfectly equipped bar wrapped up the amenities here.
This 18-room upscale boutique hotel just south of the trendy Brera had some of the most spacious digs with a blend of modern and antique decor and furnishings. Ite felt like we were in an upscale apartment than a conventional chic hotel room. They even came with contemporary bathrooms and minibars. Are you traveling with your four-legged furry companions? They get everything from dog beds and premium water bowls to custom playmats!

Urban Hive Milano

If you’re on a workcation, then the Urban Hive Milano is the perfect base for you. Armed with a slightly retro verve, this spirited boutique hotel-cum-co-working space combines playful and fun décor with modern comforts. Sitting between Brera and the financial district put us a 20-minute walk from the Duomo.
So, what made the Hive so perfect for us? Firstly, we loved the vibrant and lively interiors that made for a welcoming and warm environment to both chill and work. Since we were working, we especially loved the flexible and creative meeting places for productive work sessions, including the ground floor lounge (cost EUR 15/day, to be used as credit at café Portico84). Besides the focus was on shared working spaces, there was also a breakfast area, a communal events roster, complimentary yoga lessons during Fashion Week, a compact basement fitness room and even a courtesy shower room. We even enjoyed preferential rates at the spas nearby. Oh, and there’s also a designated dog package, free filtered water on every floor, and an EUR 10/day F&B credit for foregoing daily in-room cleaning.
Rooms are across sizes due to the wide variety of travelers who come here. Nevertheless, they’re all cheery with lively color schemes, mod-cons, Nespresso machines and kettles, and even yoga mats and weights. Plus, the bathrooms are all chic.

Boutique Hotel Borgo Nuovo

If you don’t mind staying a bit outside Zone 1, then Boutique Hotel Borgo Nuovo is a fantastic choice. We were a mere 15-minute drive from Centro Storico, especially since we had our own rental car. We loved everything about this elegant and stylish outpost, starting with its many amenities despite it being on the affordable end of the spectrum. The swimming pool was our absolute favorite as we’d enjoy languorous swims and lounges after long days of sightseeing. When the weather was nice, the terrace and sunroof was perfect for soaking up the sun rays. In-room massages and a gym aside, we absolutely dug the Italian-style breakfast at the onsite restaurant, complete with indoor and outdoor areas.
We were most impressed by the rooms and suites too, which blended vintage and rustic trinkets with a modern atmosphere. What’s more, we had many options across standard and superior digs, but they all had jewel hued palettes for opulence. If that wasn’t enough, they all had minibars and private bathrooms with complimentary bath products?

Matilde Boutique Hotel

Best location. There are a lot of things we loved about the Matilde Boutique Hotel, an outstandingly romantic stay. Firstly, the location was wonderfully desirable, in a quiet street just off the main boulevard leading to the Duomo Square. Secondly, the rooms were simply spectacular, especially the all-white color palette shot with deep/teal-green accents, lending them a rich, upscale look. Moreover, all the rooms and suites had flatscreen TVs, plush, cloud-like beds, sleek bathrooms, and even room service. Now that isn’t a service you see in a boutique hotel, do you?
However, that was not all. One of our most favorite amenities was the shared lounge, bar and restaurant, the Granary Coffee & Kitchen, downstairs. This was again a delightful surprise, given that the restaurant served all three meals, and even high tea, brunch, and aperitifs! Clearly, we’d come back to the hotel for any and all food or drinks anytime of the day we were around. Rounding up the amenities were the 24-hour front desk, the buffet breakfast, and the free Wi-Fi throughout the property.

Hotel Viu Milan
2
It’s a rather unusual location for a boutique five-star hotel, right by the financial district in Chinatown. However, everything about Hotel Viu is amazing. Large for a boutique hotel, the 124-room stay stands out for its appearance – a glass façade framed with a lush vertical garden, making it the epitome of Milan’s urban regeneration.
Constructed using sustainably sourced bronzed glass, metal, and wood, the hotel is decked out with artwork and warm earth hues. A warm, friendly, and welcoming staff aside, the hotel’s main draw is the panoramic rooftop terrace. Not just that, but it even had a small but lovely swimming pool, along with a pool bar. It was where we’d be lounging when we weren’t exploring Milan. A gym, steam room, sauna, and multi-sensory showers wrap up the offerings here.
“Finding a swimming pool with a pool bar in Milan was like finding gold! It’s one of the best boutique stays we’ve ever stayed at.”

Aethos Milan

Best overall. Sitting at the top of the list is Aethos Milan, a stylish hotel that brimmed with oodles of character and sat just 20 minutes from Duomo. Even the bustling Navigli was within easy reach of this hip and hugely atmospheric hotel, complete with rugs, heavy drapes, and low lighting. We loved the interiors that were jam-packed with curios ranging from vintage trunks to hat boxes, with sporting memorabilia taking pride of place.
The friendly staff certainly made our stay more comfortable, but it was the amenities that blew our minds away. Since a part of the stay doubles as a private members’ club, we even had access to a cool café-lounge/co-working space. Other common areas included a main living area, a large conservatory with low table seating, and two restaurants and a bar. While the restaurants included a casual pizzeria and a Mediterranean-style spot, it was the trendy bar we loved, where the bartenders would make some great cocktails.
Rooms and suites have distinctive décor, including a hodgepodge of artwork, velvet armchairs, and cocktail cabinets. While most of them are themed around various sports, others are inspired by British country estates. Additionally, they all have Nespresso machines and most, including ours, even had private balconies!

Where to Stay in Milan?
Milan is a circular city centered around the neighborhood that surrounds Piazza Duomo, which is Zone 1 a.k.a. Centro Storico, the historical center of the city. It’s home to the gorgeous and stunning Duomo Cathedral, one of the world’s most extraordinary churches. What’s more, it also has some great performance venues, cafés, and shops. Secondly, there’s the most exclusive area in Milan, which is Montenapoleone, which is part of the Quadrilatero Della Moda. Among other things, it’s an uber-chic shopping district with high street brands lining the cobblestoned streets.
We love Brera, Milan’s prettiest neighborhood and also its artistic quarter. It not only houses exclusive boutique hotels but also has a decidedly chic vibe. Another artsy neighborhood is Navigli, which sits along the Naviglio Grande canal. We loved strolling the old waterway, complete with bustling cafes and bars lining it. For those who love modernn neighborhoods, turn to the financial hub of Porta Nuova, where there’s faashion, greenery, and people power walking in suits.
Which area of Milan is best to stay in?
The best area to stay in is around Duomo, especially if you’re visiting the city for the first time. It offers easy access to major dining, shopping, and other attractions while also being well-connected by public transport.
How long is good to stay in Milan?
While there’s no upper limit on how many days you should be staying in a city, we do think that three days is enough time to hit the main attractions while also being able to explore Milan’s beautiful neighborhoods.
What is the best season for Milan?
Spring is a fantastic time to see Milan. Not only is the weather mild but also the entire city has blooms everywhere, making for a picturesque backdrop.
