There’s no doubt that Milan, Italy’s financial and fashion capital, is one of Europe’s most exciting cities. What makes it such a great city is that it has everything: historical sights and landmarks, an old city, modern neighborhoods, restaurants, cafes, and bars, gardens and parks – basically everything that a tourist can possibly want. Another thing that Milan has which every tourist loves is the epicenter of all its action, Centro Storico, a.k.a. its old town district. It’s anchored by the magnificent Duomo Cathedral, which is why luxury hotels in Milan near Duomo are so popular. We wanted to explore the best that Centro Storico had to offer, but in style and luxury. The best bit is that Milan’s luxury stays have long outnumbered any other kind of accommodation, so we had a bevy of choices from world-class brands.
So, why is the Duomo so special? It’s of historic and cultural significance to the city and one of the world’s most extraordinary churches. What made staying near the cathedral even better was that we were surrounded by the top things to do in Milan in what was one of the most visited cities in Europe. To that end, here’s how you can stay in the lap of luxury close to the Duomo cathedral in Milano.

Galleria Vik Milano, Townhouse Galleria
11
We begin with Galleria Vik Milano – Townhouse Galleria, a Hyatt Small Luxury Hotels of the World property. This place was a proper 5-star hotel with a magical setting and extreme attention to detail, tucked within Italy’s oldest shopping complex. In fact, the lobby featured artwork stretching across the ceiling, immediately setting the vibe here. Even the setting for the complimentary breakfasts at the Italian restaurant was incredible, where we could see Galeria views every morning. There was even a pizzeria, so we didn’t have to step out for casual fare either.
Our welcome into the room was no less impressive, complete with handwritten welcome notes, chocolates on the bed, and fresh macarons. What’s more, our room also had a coffeemaker and complimentary coffee and a minibar. Comforts such as a fridge (which would be restocked every time), plush beds, flatscreen TVs, and beautiful bathrooms with an industrial-vintage look completed the place.

Casa Cipriani

We were just a 20-minute walk from the Duomo at Casa Cipriani, the brainchild of the Cipriani family. It’s tucked in a gorgeous, restored 20th-century palazzo where Milanese high society fraternizes over jazz nights and backgammon tournaments. Since we were staying here, we had the choice of 15 butler-serviced rooms, which felt like we were staying in an exclusive country club. What’s more, the rooms were both seductive and elegant with striped wallpaper, thick velvet curtains, and black-and-white prints, along with utterly divine white-and-black marble bathrooms.
The rest of the palazzo hotel was equally inviting, with warm spaces featuring plush forest green hues and dark mahogany and warm walnut woods. Don’t miss sipping the club’s signature drink, the Bellini cocktail, before enjoying traditional Venetian fare at the Club Restaurant, which had terrace seating in summer. The top-floor Living Room was where we’d head to for post-dinner aperitifs. Apart from the fitness center, we loved the sleek spa with the saltwater flotation pool where we unwound and relaxed to our heart’s content.

Grand Hotel et de Milan

Imagine finding a family-run glamorous 5-star hotel within a five-minute walking distance of the Duomo. Welcome to Grand Hotel et de Milan, one of Milan’s most historic hotels sitting in the heart of the Montenapoleone neighborhood. Since it opened in 1863, it has had close ties to La Scala and was even home to composer Giuseppe Verdi, who stayed here from 1872 to his death in 1901. These days, it has timeless and classic decor on every corner, right from 19th-century paintings to statues.

Choose from a host of classically-styled rooms and suites, all of which feature period furnishings and ornaments from the family’s private collection. Think lithographs, Persian rugs, marquetry bombe commodes, walnut desks, and gilded mirrors. In terms of mod-cons, they had slick marble bathrooms with Etro bath products, flatscreen TVs, cloud-like beds, USB ports and wireless charging pads.
Since it’s one of the very few remaining family-run hotels in Milan, service was observant, considerate, discreet, and excellent, complete with a chatty and warm staff. Even though facilities were a bit limited, the hotel had a second-floor gym and a natural light-flooded veranda-like space with draping greenery and huge floor-to-ceiling windows. Two Italian restaurants serving all meals, including brunches and cocktails, wrap up the amenities here.

Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá

Less than a five-minute walk from the Duomo cathedral sat Palazzo Cordusio Gran Meliá, the first Milanese property from the Spanish hospitality group Meliá. The historic structure blends its 19th-century vibe and character with eclectic modern style on the inside, and we had just 84 rooms and suites to choose from. So, staying here made for a very intimate and exclusive stay. What’s more, they all boasted spacious and luxurious bathrooms, huge windows with spectacular views, and furnishings from upscale Italian brands. Since we were looking for something special, the sprawling Duomo suite was right up our alley. Apart from a slew of comforts and mod-cons, the suite offering unobstructed views of the Duomo Plaza and the cathedral itself too.
The amenities at this Meliá outpost uphold the brand name and its legendary hospitality and were top-notch. For one, there were four restaurants we could choose to eat and drink at. These included a fine dining restaurant, an omakase eatery with Duomo views, and, our favorite, a chic champagne bar in the lush courtyard. The serene spa with an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, and a Turkish bath was a standout. The best amenity, though, was the wonderful fifth-floor terrace where we’d drink aperitifs and enjoy stunning Duomo views.

Sina The Gray

Best boutique hotel. A gorgeous boutique hotel closest to the Duomo is Sina The Gray, with non-kitschy funky designs, dark wood and floors, and oxidized iron features. It was the same with bright red Chinese vases and the red and lobby’s fuchsia velvet swing; our eyes were popping around every corner here. Choose from modern deluxe and standard rooms and suites, with the Standard ones overlooking the serene, pedestrianized street. The larger Deluxe ones had unique features, slick mod-cons including coffeemakers and luxurious bathrooms. Our Junior suite had a whirlpool, while the other two had a Turkish bath and a peck deck.
Even though there was no fitness center or spa on the property, we could use the facilities and the amenities at the sister Hotel de La Ville nearby. Furthermore, the property itself had a second-floor terrace with comfy sofas and tables where we’d kick back with a nice drink, music, and a book. We didn’t have to step out for food either; the restaurant served delicious Italian food and the small ground-floor bar had drinks and aperitifs.

Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand Spa Milano

We wanted to really enjoy the delights of a spa, which is why we decided to stay at the Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand Spa Milano. Parisian chicness meets Milanese flair at this hotel, which is tucked on Corso di Porta Nuova. We had the choice of many sophisticated rooms and suites across 10 floors. What’s more, all of them were decked out in modern Milanese and romantic French style with marble bathrooms, huge soaking bathtubs, plush beds, coffeemakers, and even small balconies with views of Milan.
We were immediately charmed by the savvy group of concierges the minute we entered, as they catered to our every whim and fancy as if we were royalty. When the hunger pangs came calling, the informal lounge and a restaurant were an absolute treat. The neoclassical dining room was Insta-worthy, but we loved the exclusive 18th-century private garden beyond, where we’d enjoy cocktails and alfresco meals. The standout was the contemporary Bedouin Palace-like 15,000-sq-ft Grand Spa.

Park Hyatt Milan

Best location. Luxury and location come together in the form of the Park Hyatt Milan, which sits right beside Piazza del Duomo. The first Hyatt outpost on Italian soil, this hotel boasted an elegant Baroque exterior. It’s not surprising, considering that this 1870-built palazzo was formerly a bank. We were treated to a meet-and-greet the minute we entered, whisking us away quickly and efficiently to our luxurious digs. Choose from just 106 rooms and suites, all of which featured Italian marble bathrooms and one-of-a-kind Laura Tonatto products. Walk-in closets and minibars aside, many of the suites, including ours, even boasted private terraces. If you want even more indulgence, go for the Duomo Suite, which had a gold-leaf-tiled Jacuzzi in the secluded patio and views of the Duomo courtyard.
Did you know that this hotel has an eminent roster of past guests? These include the likes of Michelle Obama and her daughters, Lady Gaga, and even former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The subterranean spa was the perfect place to unwind on a hot Milanese afternoon, where we enjoyed massages as well as a lie-in in the Turkish baths and hydromassage tub. Our eyes popped when we saw the relaxation area, which had a whirlpool laid with 250,000 24-karat gold-leaf tiles. Two dining options, an Italian and a Mediterranean one, as well as happy “aperitivo” hour on the seasonal terrace during summer round up the amenities here.

Four Seasons Hotel Milano

Where there’s a Four Seasons, there’s luxury, isn’t it? Welcome to the Four Seasons Hotel Milano, a 15th-century convent-turned-luxurious urban oasis sitting just 5 minutes from the Duomo cathedral. We loved the frescoes, stone accents, and vaulted ceilings, having been floored the minute we stepped in. The amenities here were top-notch; we especially enjoyed aperitifs and live piano music at the Foyer Bar, which was the former’s church’s convent. The rest of the amenities were no less impressive, complete with a fitness center, a full-service Rossano Ferretti salon, a decadent spa and a sleek indoor pool.
The best part of staying at this Four Seasons outpost was that no matter which room one chose, one could be sure to enjoy a gorgeous view. These were either those of the pedestrian-only Via Gesù or the wonderfully manicured lush gardens. Since it was a former church, all rooms were architecturally unique, but they all featured subtle color hues, plush Frette linens, and floor-to-ceiling marble bathrooms with soaking tubs that were huge enough for two people. Our suite even had a magnificent original fresco from the church.

Mandarin Oriental, Milan

Best spa hotel. Eastern charm comes to Milan at the Mandarin Oriental, Milan, which is made up of 4 interconnected 18th-century palazzos. Since the hotel sits in what was formerly a bank, the main entrance sits on a quiet, serene backstreet a mere five-minute walk from the Duomo. So, the 100+ rooms and suites here overlook not busy streets, but small cobblestoned ones and tranquil lush courtyards. What’s more, they all were lavish with muted color palettes, wooden floors, and black-and-white Italian marble bathrooms with walk-in water closets (!) and Dr. Vranjes beauty products. If you want to splurge, there’s no place better than the design-focused signature suites or the marvelous terraced Presidential Suite.
Since it’s the Mandarin Oriental, it did excellently well in terms of amenities. The standout for us was the age-old Oriental styled subterranean spa, with its treatment menu based on the five feng shui elements. After a massage session, we headed to the indoor heated turquoise pool, which also came with a sauna, a steam room, and a relaxation area, a steam room, and a sauna. Rounding up the offerings are the restaurants, one of which not only had an intimate marble dining room but also more than 1,300 exquisite wine labels.

Armani Hotel Milano

One of the iconic Italian gems of Milano is the Armani Hotel Milano is a quintessentially Milanese iconic destination bringing to life the luxurious aesthetic of Italian fashion great Giorgio Armani.
If you thought that the exterior of this A-shaped structure’s 1930s Brera façade is seemingly austere, wait till you get inside — glossy elegance to the hilt. The hotel assigned us personal lifestyle managers the minute we checked-in, with them catering to our every whim and fancy at the drop of the hat. The OTT amenities here included a state-of-the-art fitness center aside, a host of Italian dining options, as well as the ground-floor Armani-designed outpost of the famed Nobu. However, the sublime spa and the rooftop tranquil relaxation pool were our favorites, as all we wanted to do after a ton of sightseeing was relax and unwind.
The rooms and suites here were unsurprisingly luxurious, featuring pieces from the Armani Casa collection. Mod-cons included the usual likes of in-room iPads, complimentary minibars, and beautifully fragrant Armani bath products. However, for a touch of something special, check out the Armani Presidential Suite, which even has a terrace with insane Milan views. That’s why it’s one of the best Milan 5-star luxury hotels.

Bulgari Hotel

Best overall. There’s no way any luxury Milano hotel list is complete without mentioning its other iconic stay, the Bulgari Hotel Milano. One of the best hotels in Milan Italy near Duomo, it’s the first outpost of hospitality arm of Bulgari. Tucked in a former 18th-century Milanese palazzo, complete with a 43,000-sq-ft-huge lush garden, this hotel lived up to its billing — and how. The rooms and suites were, unsurprisingly luxurious, with light-flooded living rooms and bedrooms, soaring windows, and gorgeous views. On the inside, mod-cons ruled the roost, including plush, cloud-like beds, coffeemakers and the like. We loved the stunning bathrooms which featured bathtubs and sublime Bulgari bath products.
“Staying at the Bulgari Hotel was the very epitome of luxury. It was easily the most luxurious of all our luxury stays!”
WOW Travel
The serenity extended to the amenities and the surroundings, especially since the outdoor gardens were visible from just about everywhere. Everywhere we saw, we could see nature-inspired hues, marble and stone from all around the world, and high-end finishes. The highlight of R&R here was The Bvlgari Spa, which also featured a jaw-dropping indoor pool. Rounding things up was the onsite Il Ristorante serving classic Italian fare by acclaimed chef Niko Romito.
